With skillful storytelling and rich historic detail, Victoria Hislop brings this little-known chapter in Greek history vividly to life. Hislop’s meticulous research is evident on every page, bringing the characters and story to life in vivid detail. And she held me tight by the heartstrings, making me feel every emotion alongside the characters as I turned the pages and I was an emotional wreck by the end.
I loved how Hislop showcased the dichotomy of people’s experiences during the conflict. The best example of this was through Iliana and Fontin’s experiences immediately after being taken from their village. After her arduous journey, Iliana finds herself in a utopia where she has knowledge, food, equality and a life she enjoys. Meanwhile, Fotini is imprisoned without enough food, is surrounded by dying women and just wants to go back to her old life.
The captivating and memorable characters were a joy to read. I particularly loved reading feisty Iliana and wise Nikos. My mother’s heart went out to Fotini and Markella, who had a wonderful friendship that lasted through the years. And it was so fun to see a cameo from some of the characters from The Island.

Victoria Hislop studied English Literature at Oxford University and afterwards worked in book publishing, PR and journalism. During her time as a journalist, she wrote on education and travel for national newspapers and magazines and was sent on assignments around the world.
Inspired by a visit to Spinalonga, the abandoned Greek leprosy colony, Victoria wrote The Island in 2005. She was named Newcomer of the Year at the British Book Awards and the novel became an international bestseller, translated into 40 languages, with over 6 million copies sold worldwide. It was turned into a 26-part Greek TV series which achieved record ratings for Greece.
Her affection for the Mediterranean then took her to Spain, and in The Return she wrote about the painful secrets of its civil war.
In her third novel, The Thread, Victoria returned to Greece to tell the extraordinary and turbulent tale of Thessaloniki and its people across the 20th century. Published in 2011 to widespread acclaim, it confirmed her reputation as an inspirational storyteller and was shortlisted for a British Book Award. The Thread is currently in development with a Greek TV production company, Heretic.
The Sunrise, set in Cyprus and published in 2014, was followed by Cartes Postales from Greece, which is her first work of fully colour-illustrated fiction and was also short-listed for the British Book Awards fiction title of the year. It was adapted into a twelve-part drama for ERT1 in 2021.

Victoria’s first book for children, Maria’s Island (listed by Waterstones as one of the best children’s books of the year) was also published in 2020 – and is an adaptation of The Island for a younger audience.
Her latest novel, The Figurine, was a number 1 bestseller in paperback A central theme is the looting of archaeological treasures and the meaning of “home”.
Most of Victoria’s novels have hit the number one position in the UK charts, but have also been bestsellers in Greece, China, France, Israel and Norway. She has won several literary awards in France.
As well as studying the Greek language (it is her ultimate ambition to read everything and anything without the presence of a dictionary by her side), she spends her spare time reading, swimming, boxing, playing tennis and, these days, dancing (having been a contestant in Greece’s version of “Strictly” in 2021).
She is an ambassador for Lepra, a UK charity that raises money to treat the estimated three million leprosy sufferers worldwide, and is also an avid supporter of the National Literacy Trust which promotes reading in the UK. Victoria is Patron of Knossos 2025 which has raised funds to renew the British School of Athens research centre in Crete and she has recently been appointed Vice-President of the BSA.

Well-written, expertly plotted, intricately interwoven and surprising, Alex Hay crafted a treasure trove of mysteries and misdirects and transported me back back to the roaring 1920s with all of its sophistication and glamour. An array of potential victims and suspects kept me guessing and I was on tenterhooks from start to finish.
The story is filled with a collection of charismatic characters who leap from the pages. But the characters I loved most were the array of strong, feisty, audacious and devious women who were unashamedly themselves. These women were taking their lives into their own hands and refusing to conform to societal expectations or cow down to men. I had a real soft spot for Cleo and loved her character arc. But there were some great male characters, too, and I enjoyed reading Joe and following his journey as he tried to uncover the truth about the bodies in the vault.
A glamorous and entertaining murder mystery that you don’t want to miss.

Like many people, I love people-watching. There’s just something fun about sitting back watching people go by and wondering about their life and who they are. Or when you overhear part of an interesting conversation and wonder about the story behind it or what will happen next. This makes Main Characters the perfect romcom for me. Because this is no ordinary love story. It’s a love story told from others’ perspectives, telling the story through the eyes of the family, friends, flatmates and strangers who interact with Clara and Seb throughout their relationship.
Warning: this book will break you! Bobby Palmer is an author who can always be relied upon to write a gorgeous, original and clever story that makes you feel all the feelings. And this book might be a deviation from the magical realism of his first two books, but it has the same heart, warmth and emotion that you expect from a Bobby Palmer book. I laughed, cried, raged, cringed, my heart was broken and filled back up again with joy. Beautifully written, emotionally rich and deftly plotted, it has a cinematic feel and feels perfect for a movie adaptation. It’s fresh, funny, moving, and wise. And it might have the most unique and adorable meet-cute ever. A gorgeous story about love, grief and human connection, it is told in vignettes that capture various moments in Clara and Seb’s lives and relationship. It did take me a little bit of time to get used to the unusual perspective and to feel a connection to the main characters because of that, but I was soon completely enthralled and rooting for them at every step.
Clara and Seb are messy, magnetic and painfully human. And I loved reading them. I always think it’s interesting to see a character from another person’s perspective so I loved that we only get that in this book. We get a well-rounded picture from a wide variety of people and I especially loved the parts narrated by strangers as they get such a brief and narrow glimpse into Seb and Clara’s lives that isn’t coloured by anything other than what is happening at that moment. I also liked that it felt so different to any other romance I’ve read. Most romcoms explore the build-up to a relationship and end at the honeymoon stage. But we all know real life isn’t that smooth and real relationships come with ups and downs, even for the happiest of couples. So I liked that Clara and Seb’s story followed them for many years and through an array of obstacles, highs and lows. It felt relatable, honest and deeply human, reminding us that even the best of relationships can be hard sometimes whilst always making you believe in the power of true love.
A sublime summer romance that you don’t want to miss, add this to your TBR now!

Multi-layered, tender, tense and claustrophobic, Room 706 is an explosive debut. Morally ambiguous and thought provoking it follows Kate, who has just enjoyed a day of illicit love-making with her lover, James. As he showers she turns on the TV in the hotel room and the news is reporting a story about a siege under way at a hotel. Horrorstruck, Kate realises it is their hotel. Now, instead of making her way home and collecting her children from school, she’s stuck in a hotel room with her lover. How will she explain this to her husband? How on earth is this a debut? Ellie Levenson writes like a seasoned veteran. Her storytelling is nuanced, raw and sensitive, her characters achingly human and flawed, her plot cleverly choreographed and tightly paced, and her twists surprising. I’ll admit that I went into this expecting a thriller, but while it is full of fear and tension, it isn’t a thriller. Levenson describes it as ‘fiction for the clever but tired woman’, which is the perfect description. I was in Ellie’s thrall, glued to the pages as we moved between events in the hotel room and flashbacks that tell the story of both of Kate’s relationships. And that ending! I almost threw the book across the room and can see why so many people are talking about it.
The moral ambiguity of this story is at the heart of its charm. Kate loves her husband and her affair is simply self-care for her. An escape from the monotony of marriage and motherhood. She recognises how wrong it is but also isn’t willing to give it up. And whatever your thoughts on the morality of her choices, it’s impossible not to like and root for this lady and feel sad for her as she’s trapped in a terrifying situation totally unsupported. Something I loved about Kate was how even when she’s fearing for her life she still worries about things like the food shopping, buying her son a costume for school and uploading family photos to the cloud. It’s definitely what I could imagine myself doing in her situation.
A riveting and unforgettable debut by an author who is one to watch, Room 706 is a must for your TBR.

As a mother myself I can’t imagine the pain of having your children taken from you and not knowing if they are alive or dead. I was rooting for Rachel at every step, rejoicing in her success and crying at her losses. The other characters are just as well written and there were some really touching relationships between the characters that I loved reading, especially Mary Grace and Nobody.
Warm, hopeful, immersive and affecting, this is a must-read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

Darkly funny, quirky and inventive, That’ll Teach Her is a gripping whodunnit that I consumed in just a few hours. Skillfully written and cleverly plotted, Maz Evans has crafted a suspenseful and pacy mystery that keeps you guessing. Told by multiple narrators in mixed media, Evans uses the parents’ group chat, police witness statements, local press articles and school newsletters alongside traditional narration to tell the story, and I found myself trying to solve the clues alongside the parents. The book is filled with the familiar playground politics, parents trying to figure out homework and juggle their busy lives. It’s been quite a few years since my kids were at primary school and there was no group chat back then, but the story still took me back to the days where gossip spreads like wildfire and I loved the idea of using it as a tool to help amateur sleuths to solve a murder.
There’s a large cast of characters, with some playing a larger role than others, but all of them leap from the pages and pull you into the story. The group chat was filled with all of the different kinds of parents we all recognise such as the pushy parent, the parent who seems to have everything together, the chilled parent, the disorganised parent, etc, and their chats felt like they could have actually been lifted from a real parents WhatApp group chat. The staff working at the school also felt familiar and I enjoyed trying to figure out which one of them could have killed Claudia.
Entertaining, witty, original and heartfelt, this is a murder mystery that will make you laugh while keeping you on the edge of your seat. Highly recommended.

1898. Quinn Le Blanc, London’s most talented con woman, is the reigning Queen of Fives. For her latest con she has just five days to trick an eligible duke into marriage and take a fortune from him. But Quinn isn’t the only one with a trick up her sleeve; someone else is playing their own con. And their sights are firmly set on the Queen of Fives…
Alex Hay transports us back to Victorian high society for this clever, cunning, shrewd and daring story of subterfuge and fortune-hunting. Skillfully written and cleverly choreographed, Hay had me in his thrall from start to finish. I was on tenterhooks as I tried to predict who could trust who or what would happen next and totally invested in Quinn’s game. I loved that while Quinn is so focused on her game she’s also unwittingly embroiled in a play of someone else’s making, raising the stakes higher than ever before. With its many storylines it kept me on my toes as Hay expertly and intricately wove the many storylines together to create an explosive and jaw-dropping finale.
Furnished with a cast of fascinating and richly drawn characters who were so much fun to read, no-one is what they seem in this complex tale. Feisty, spirited, crafty and undaunted, Quinn thrived on the high stakes games she plays, unlike her faithful assistant Mr. Silk, who is much more jaded. The pattern of opposites continued with the Kendal Family as we have the feisty, independent and determined Tor alongside the much quieter and weary Duke. The ‘boy in the blue waistcoat’ was a dastardly villain who added a tantalising air or mystery that kept me guessing right up until the big reveal.
Audacious, immersive and fiendishly delightful, this story of Victorian high society, high jinx, deception and danger is one not to be missed.
