Look at that impressive tome! Isn’t it gorgeous? Who wouldn’t want to buy it for the cover and spredges alone? Okay, it looks a bit daunting, but fortunately this book was written by Laura Shepherd-Robinson, an author who I know I can rely on to deliver a heart-stopping mystery that is as captivating as it is rich in historic detail.
Red, the daughter of a Cornish fortune-teller, travels with her father making a living predicting fortunes using the ancient method of the Square of Sevens. When her father dies suddenly she becomes the ward of Mr. Antrobus, a gentleman scholar. They go to Bath where Red is raised as a lady, but uses her fortune-telling to delight high society. All the while, there are questions that gnaw at her she can’t escape: who was her mother? How did she die? And who are the mysterious enemies that her father was always scared would find him? Are they searching for her? Red sets out on a quest for the truth. But that quest brings her great danger alongside the possibility of great reward.
Gothic, mythical, suspenseful and complex, TheSquare of Sevens is a mesmerising tale. Spanning Cornwall, Bath, London and Devon, and traversing the raucous Bartholomew Fair, the glamour of high society and England’s most powerful questions, it is an ambitious and audacious tale. Exquisitely written, skillfully choreographed, intricately interwoven, full of misdirection and bold twists, this had me hooked. It did feel a bit long at times, but every time I started to feel like my attention was waning there would be another exciting turn that piqued my interest. It’s like Laura knew where we’d need those moments in this chunky book. There is a distinctly Dickensian feel that I enjoyed while Laura’s meticulous research is evident on every page and I enjoyed the small details such as the information about different cards at the start of each chapter. There is a large motley crew of characters that I loved reading and Red was a clever and compelling protagonist. She lived an unusual life that I enjoyed reading about and I was rooting for her to find the answers to her questions.
I highly recommend this sweeping historical mystery.

MY REVIEW:
“They will fear you and flee you and call you a monster, just like they do your sisters.”
Fierce, feminist, moving and addictive, Stone Blind is a powerful story full of humour, strength, empathy, heartbreak and righteous female rage. It tells the story of Medusa, offering you a new way to see the myths we think we know so well. And it tells us how a story can be warped and twisted until the truth is no longer recognisable.
Medusa is a myth I have long been fascinated with, and as a long-time fan of Natalie Haynes, I was excited to see her bring her and her story to life in a new way. Medusa is the original complicated protagonist, and I have a soft spot for those kinds of characters. Traditionally billed as the villain, this book finally exposes the truth of Medusa’s fate in all of its devastating and complicated glory. It’s unsettling and hard to read in places, but never gratuitous, exposing the so-called heroes for the villains they really are. And while it is billed as Medusa’s story, the snake-haired Gorgan is actually only a part of this tale. It is also a book about the bickering, jealous, selfish and vengeful gods and goddesses who are inextricably linked with Medusa and her tragic fate.
“I feel like becoming the monster he made.”
The story itself is exquisitely written, richly layered and intricate. I listened to the audiobook, which is narrated by Haynes. Her narration is evocative and emotive, making the world around me disappear as the story came to life around me. It’s emotional, raw and heartbreaking, but also funny, insightful and passionate. Natalie’s meticulous research and extensive knowledge is evident throughout, making these ancient stories feel as relatable and resonant today as they were when first written.
A magnificent retelling, I highly recommend this to anyone who likes Greek Mythology or stories about strong women.

Kate Foster once again proves fact is stranger than fiction with this astonishing and unforgettable novel. Based on the true story of Maggie Dickson, a Scottish woman who was charged with the murder of her baby and sentenced to hang for the crime. But that isn’t what makes her famous. Maggie is remembered because she survived her hanging. The Mourning Necklace is a fictionalised account of what happened, weaving fact with fiction to tell the story of her life and imagine how she escaped death.
Maggie is a fascinating character. Strong, determined but naive, she has big dreams but actually knows very little about life and the world. When the story opens, all we know is that she miraculously survived her hanging, that she claims she didn’t murder her child, and that she’s hiding a secret. We then jump back a year and follow her as a series of unfortunate events lead up to her arrest. Despite not knowing what had happened that fateful night for a lot of the book, I liked Maggie and had a lot of empathy for her as she went through so many tragic events that highlighted how hard life was for a woman at that time. But was she guilty of murder? And how did she survive her hanging? I wasn’t sure and you will have to read the book to find out.
Kate Foster can do no wrong. I’ve read all three of her books and each one is sheer perfection. Just like her previous books, this story is exquisitely told, richly imagined and meticulously researched, transporting us to 18th Century Scotland. Ablaze with tension, we are kept on the edge of our seats for more than half the book, wondering if Maggie murdered her baby and how she survived hanging. But even when those questions are answered the tension doesn’t ease. More questions come to the forefront to keep us turning the pages, making this a book that is impossible to put down. And while Maggie’s conviction and escape from death grab our attention, there is so much more to her and her story that is compelling. In this book Foster explores themes such as reproductive and women’s rights, poverty, poor working conditions, patriarchy, motherhood, domestic abuse, grief and heartache, making it a story that feels as relevant today as it did hundreds of years ago.
Outrageous, riveting and utterly magnificent, The Mourning Necklace had me enrapt from start to finish. And that ending 😭😭😭

But this year is different from the others, and not only because this year her mum wanted to go somewhere where there are a lot of people. This year ten-year-old Alix feels alone. Her older sister, Vanessa, is a teenager who is more interested in boys than her little sister, and her parents are distracted. If it wasn’t for her new friend, Kahu, she’d have no-one to hang out with this summer. And it is Kahu who tells Alix about The Mystery. Two years ago a girl named Charlotte went missing and has never been found. They decide to investigate and begin to look for clues. But they will soon uncover secrets that they wish they’d never found…
Atmospheric, immersive and intriguing, A Beautiful Family is a riveting debut. Blending historical fiction, mystery, family saga and coming-of-age story, Jennifer Trevelyan has crafted a gorgeous slice of life novel that delivers a strong emotional punch. Trevelyan’s storytelling is exquisite, achingly human, and so evocative that you can feel the heat of the sun on your skin, feel the sand in between your toes and smell the suncream. A nostalgic tale, there is an air of simpler times that I remember from my own childhood in that era. But there is also an unbearable sense of dread that lingers over every page, Trevelyan holding her reader captive by rationing the reveals and drip-feeding information piece by piece. I was in her thrall, on the edge of my seat and terrified for Alix.
For such an emotional story you need a great protagonist. And Alix was just that. Likeable and easy to root for, she’s a typical kid of the 80s who enjoys listening to music on her walkman, playing outside with friends, and is excited about her annual summer holiday. Trevelyan expertly puts the reader in Alix’ shoes, conveying that sense of naivety and innocence that was more common back then.
While Alix may not understand a lot of what is happening around her, the reader does. And that sense of tragedy and danger that comes from the things we understand only adds to the tension. And whenever Alix felt those emotions she didn’t quite understand I wished I could reach into the book and explain what was going on and help her. But I was helpless, only able to read on tenterhooks as I waited to see what would happen.
A magnificent debut that will leave you wanting more, this is the perfect summer read. Add it to your TBR now.
