MY REVIEW:
Melodic, haunting, achingly beautiful, sensual and heart-wrenching, Double Room is like nothing I’ve ever read before. Anne Senes has a style that is all her own; a lyrical and moving prose that was enthralling and I savoured every sumptuousword. I was lost in these pages, completely enveloped by this strange and hypnotic tale. A fever-dream of love, loss and grief.
The story follows Stan, a composer who returns to his native France to try and put his life back together after the tragic and sudden death of his wife, Liv. Unable to deal with his grief, he spends his nights creating an AI machine endowed with Liv’s voice. In time he moves on, creating a blended family with Babette. But the machine – Laively – seems to take on a life of its own and Stan’s life begins to spiral out of control, threatening the new life and family he’s created.
Told in dual timelines, the flashbacks begin twenty years ago on the day Stan and Liv first met. She was the love of his life and they enjoyed a fairytale romance. Meanwhile, in the present he’s still trying to move on from Liv’s death and navigate the minefield that is blending a family. He’s not over Liv and it’s affecting his new family. Also, his reliance on the AI machine is unhealthy and unnerving, and Babette understandably isn’t happy about it. Strange things start happening and Stan loses himself in his dreams or locks himself away in his studio rather than dealing with his problems. He struggles to differentiate between reality, fantasy and memory and I was concerned he was descending deeper and deeper into madness and what effect it would have on his already troubled family. I had so many questions: were the strange occurrences real? How could a machine be acting of its own accord? What was real and what was imagined?
Stan starts as a romantic character in his flashbacks with Liv and I enjoyed reading their love story. There is an overwhelming sense of grief that runs through the present narrative, and Stan is a withdrawn and sorrowful character. It was impossible not to feel heartbroken for him and his daughter, but as the story went on he got more unlikeable. I also began to wonder if everything was what it seemed, and felt like there might be something more going on under the surface of this story. Slowly and expertly, Senes revealed the truth and it was apparent that nothing was as it had first appeared to be.
Original, delicate, passionate and beguiling, this is an unforgettable debut.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Anne Senes is a writer, translator and former journalist. She was born in Paris and studied at the Sorbonne, where she obtained a PhD in English studies. Her passion for Anglo-Saxon literature and culture has taken her all over the world, from London to Miami, via the south of France. She is currently based on the French Mediterranean coast. Chambre Double (Double Room) is her first literary novel.
Alice Banks was born in Shropshire and completed her MA in Literary Translation at the University of East Anglia. She now lives in Madrid where she works as a translator from French and Spanish into English. Her first translation, Deranged As I Am, by Comoros writer, Ali Zamir, was published in 2022 and was followed by Madrid Will Be Their Tomb, by Spanish political spokesperson and author, Elizabeth Duval, published in 2023. Alice collaborates with Hablemos, escritoras to translate their podcasts and content into English, and also with The European Literaturen Network, where she worked as Assistant Editor on their Spanish edition of The Riveter magazine.

MY REVIEW:
London, 1965. Maggie Flynn is anything but the typical 1960s mum. Because Maggie is a spy working for MI5 who stalks the streets of London in her many disguises and struggling to balance her clandestine career with single motherhood now she is widowed. But when Maggie makes a surprising discovery about her late husband, things get even more out of control as she is drawn deeper into the dangerous and murky side of espionage.
Intelligent, suspenseful, witty, intriguing and thrilling, this was such a treat! A nostalgic trip to the 60s that is rich in historic detail, M. J. Robotham has created a story that is evocatively told, cleverly plotted, intricately interwoven and twisty, pulling you into the story and holding you captive until the very last page. One of my favourite parts of the writing was the gorgeous imagery and metaphors that Robotham used, bringing the story to life around me. A story filled with treachery, secrets, subterfuge, lies and grief, chapter by chapter the plot unfolds, themes of family, loss and grief are delicately woven into the narrative, allowing the reader to empathise with the characters and the situations they find themselves in. I loved the lighthearted and upbeat vibe the story had and often found myself laughing out loud. Robotham expertly merged this with the stories darker and more suspenseful moments, keeping the lighthearted vibe whilst also keeping me on tenterhooks and making my heart race.
I loved Maggie. She has an unusual job but she’s relatable and easy to root for, mixing the ordinary and extraordinary of her life as a spy and role as a mother. I loved how fierce, upbeat and light-hearted she was, her narration was so entertaining and funny, keeping me totally immersed in the story and Maggie’s world. Maggie’s mum, Gilda, was a fantastic and ebullient character, and I loved Maggie’s banter with fellow spy Frank. The background characters were also richly drawn and there was an abundance of unsavory and unlikeable characters that I loved to hate.
A dark yet delightful historical mystery, Mrs Spy is perfect for fans of Dear Mrs Bird and Lessons in Chemistry.

MY REVIEW:
Born under Halley’s Comet, Robin has always known that he will die when it returns on July 29th 2061. Now halfway through his carefully ordered life, things are thrown into disarray when he has to move back home to care for his sick father. Now he must make new plans, but life seems to be getting in the way.
Heartfelt, moving, poignant and funny, Happy Is the One is an unforgettable story. I fell in love with Katie Allen’s gorgeous storytelling when I read her debut, Everything Happens For A Reason and have been eagerly awaiting this follow up. I was not disappointed. Once again, Allen makes us reflect on life and some important questions with her thought-provoking story as she explores topics such as love, family, friends, and what it is that really matters. Her writing is heartfelt, warm and witty but also heartbreaking, real and unflinching, stripping away the layers of pretence and distraction that we often surround ourselves in. I was enthralled and completely lost myself in this beautiful story.
The story is told by Robin, a quirky and unique protagonist who I certainly won’t forget in a hurry. Central to the story, and Robin’s whole persona, is his belief that he is invincible until Halley’s Comet returns. He was first told this as a child, but his belief solidified when he survived the car accident that killed his mother when he was just twelve. Ever since, this belief has been at the centre of his life and every decision he makes. Robin is regimented, planning every aspect of his life and future down to the smallest detail, making him often quite selfish and frustrating, but I warmed to him over time. The background characters were equally compelling and I enjoyed watching Robin reconnect with Danny and navigate a burgeoning romance with Astrid. But it is his relationship with his father, Ken, who has dementia, that was most moving. Ms. Allen wrote with honesty and sensitivity, creating a fully rounded and interesting character while also accurately portraying the realities of caring for someone with such demanding and complex needs.
Happy is the One is a powerful, unpredictable and life-affirming story that will tug on your heart strings. A must have addition for your TBR.

Everything Happens for a Reason is Katie’s first novel. She used to be a journalist and columnist at the Guardian and Observer, and started her career as a Reuters correspondent in Berlin and London. The events in Everything Happens for a Reason are fiction, but the premise is loosely autobiographical. Katie’s son, Finn, was stillborn in 2010, and her character’s experience of grief and being on maternity leave without a baby is based on her own. Imagine a world where we all live a long, healthy life free from the complications of ageing. No more dementia, heart diseases, chronic pain or other ageing related conditions. Just a long life in our prime. It sounds like paradise. But would it be?
An incredible discovery means that people now live to 120 thanks to an annual anti-ageing injection. In this dystopian future, 115-year-old Ruth is an elder quietly working her mandatory national service and anticipating her transition day. But behind the unassuming facade are dark secrets she has hidden for decades. Years ago while she was trying to find a cure for the devastating illness that killed her young daughter, Ruth made a discovery that changed the world and led to the creation of ReJuve, the annual anti-ageing injection now widely used. But Ruth’s research was hijacked by her partner Erik Grundleger, a ruthless man on a quest for immortality who used it to create SuperJuve, a once in a lifetime injection for the wealthy elite, nicknamed Supers, who want to live forever. But that injection was outlawed when it was discovered that it led to psychosis.

Eve Smith has done it again. It’s been two weeks since I finished this book and I’m still reeling. Outstanding, original, though-provoking and terrifying, The Cure, is a riveting thriller that also serves as a cautionary tale, showing how in the wrong hands, something wonderful can be turned into a nightmare. I’ve been a huge fan of Eve’s books ever since her fantastic debut and this is her best yet. Masterfully written, meticulously researched, fast-paced, and full of surprising twists, Eve spins a chillingly believable tale that wrenched me out of my own reality and into the one she created. She also makes you think, forcing me to ponder important questions that I’d never considered before as she examines the problems of an ageing population, dwindling resources, the dilemma of lifespan versus healthspan, social healthcare and privilege.
The two women at the centre of this story are fascinating characters and I loved reading them. They are very different but also quite similar, both of them being fierce and strong in their own way. Moving between narrators and timelines, we see their heart-rending backstories unfold and I was inspired by the way they have taken their pain and turned it into what motivates them in their chosen field. I enjoyed watching them learn to work together and get to know each other and would love to see them reprise their investigative duo in another book. And we can’t talk about the characters without talking about the villain, Erik Grundleger. Brilliantly written, this odious and reprehensible man made my skin crawl and made me angry every time he was on the page.
Addictive, clever, suspenseful and unsettling, Eve had me hooked from start to finish with this magnificent thriller. It’s one not to be missed and I can’t wait for whatever she writes next.

MY REVIEW:
I don’t know what I expected when I picked up this book, but it certainly wasn’t what I got. Tense, unnerving and eerie, this extraordinary debut captivated me from the opening pages where we meet Frankie, a young woman on honeymoon in Greece. She’s having the time of her life, until an ominous palm reading shakes her to the core. When years later she is sure there is something not quite right about her youngest son, Michael, Frankie can’t help but think back to that reading. And, as he gets older, the strangeness and darkness in him becomes undeniable.
Isabel Shirlaw has proven herself as an author to watch with this brilliant debut. Heartbreakingly raw, moving, powerful and thought-provoking, this is a book that will stay with me long after reading. Moving between timelines, we follow Frankie and Michael’s relationship through the years, examining the complexities of the bond between a mother and her children, and forces us to consider what happens when you not only struggle to love and like one of your children, but also fear them. Shirlaw skillfully writes in shades of grey so that we are never quite sure if the problem lies with Michael or Frankie’s belief in the reading all those years ago. Atmospheric and unsettling, a strong sense of foreboding lingers over the pages and keeps you on the edge of your seat. But I was still unprepared for what was to come and won’t be over that finale for a very long time.
Reminiscent of We Need To Talk About Kevin, this is a layered and intricate thriller that demands to be read.

MY REVIEW:
Atmospheric, evocative and enthralling, Madame Matisse peels back the curtain to tell the story of the three women in the life of celebrated artist Henri Matisse: his wife, Amelie, her assistant, Lydia, and his daughter, Marguerite. Told from multiple points of view over multiple decades, truth proves stranger than fiction in this compelling story of art, glamour, love, passion and betrayal.
The story opens in Nice, 1939. Henri’s wife, Madame Amelie Matisse, has been at his side for forty years. Now suffering from chronic pain and mostly housebound, she has employed Russian emigre Lydia Delectorskaya to assist her in her daily tasks. They had initially got along well, but recently Amelie has begun to fear that Lydia has stolen the affections of her husband and invaded her household. Desperate to regain control, Amelie issues Henri with an ultimatum: her or Lydia. Meanwhile, Henri’s daughter Marguerite is caught in the crossfires of their conflict, unsure how to help either of her parents.
First of all, can we take a moment to admire the beautiful cover, which is matched by Sophie Haydock’s beautiful storytelling. This is merged with her meticulous research and evocative imagery, bringing these historical characters to life once more. Each of the women take turns to narrate their story: first Amelie, Henri’s formidable and loyal wife, then his deviated assistant, Lydia, and finally Marguerite, the loving daughter. They are three very different women whose lives are shaped by one man. Exploring themes of identity and sexism, Haydock examines how each of the women sacrifice so much of themselves for Henri, struggling to find their place in the world other than as his wife, companion or daughter. All three women are very intelligent, but they have little opportunity to explore their own potential as they are pushed to the sidelines for Henri, making themselves smaller in order to elevate him and end up becoming part of his story instead of creating their own. Haydock finally gives them the chance to be the star of their own story and I loved learning about these fascinating women.

MY REVIEW:
When Claudia Stitchwell, the reviled headmistress of St Nonnatus, drops dead in the school hall, there are four possible suspects: Hattie, the adored school cook who has been around forever, Ben, the popular deputy headteacher all the parents love, Kiera, one of the parents who also works as a teaching assistant, and Clive, the unpopular school bursar. In the Y6 parents group chat they discuss each of the suspects and their possible motives. Can they piece together the clues and uncover Claudia’s killer?
Darkly funny, quirky and inventive, That’ll Teach Her is a gripping whodunnit that I consumed in just a few hours. Skillfully written and cleverly plotted, Maz Evans has crafted a suspenseful and pacy mystery that keeps you guessing. Told by multiple narrators in mixed media, Evans uses the parents’ group chat, police witness statements, local press articles and school newsletters alongside traditional narration to tell the story, and I found myself trying to solve the clues alongside the parents. The book is filled with the familiar playground politics, parents trying to figure out homework and juggle their busy lives. It’s been quite a few years since my kids were at primary school and there was no group chat back then, but the story still took me back to the days where gossip spreads like wildfire and I loved the idea of using it as a tool to help amateur sleuths to solve a murder.
There’s a large cast of characters, with some playing a larger role than others, but all of them leap from the pages and pull you into the story. The group chat was filled with all of the different kinds of parents we all recognise such as the pushy parent, the parent who seems to have everything together, the chilled parent, the disorganised parent, etc, and their chats felt like they could have actually been lifted from a real parents WhatApp group chat. The staff working at the school also felt familiar and I enjoyed trying to figure out which one of them could have killed Claudia.
Entertaining, witty, original and heartfelt, this is a murder mystery that will make you laugh while keeping you on the edge of your seat. Highly recommended.

She is the proud creator of the WHO LET THE GODS OUT?, VI SPY and SCARLETT FIFEseries for children, and OVER MY DEAD BODY and THAT’LL TEACH HER for adults, which have collectively travelled to 24 countries. OVER MY DEAD BODY was shortlisted for the CWA Gold Dagger and won the Capital Crime Fingerprint Award for her self-narrated audiobook. Her work for children has garnered over 50 nominations, including the Carnegie Medal, Branford Boase, Books Are My Bag, Waterstone’s Children’s Book of the Year, Indie Children’s Book of the Year and CrimeFest Best Children’s Book. She hardly won any. Maz narrates the audiobooks for her series and her acclaimed live events have regularly featured at Hay, Imagine, Edinburgh, Bath, Cheltenham, Bestival, Wilderness, CarFest and countless literary festivals around the UK.
Not content with being a mediocre author, Maz has also committed to mediocrity as a scriptwriter and lyricist and is proud to be bringing both average skills to the stage adaptation of WHO LET THE GODS OUT? which will be produced by Polka Theatre, London in 2026. She has previously had shows produced at the Union Theatre, London, The Actor’s Church, Covent Garden and the Southend Palace Theatre. They weren’t bad either.
Maz has contributed to RETURN TO WONDERLAND, THE BOOK OF HOPES and SWALLOWED BY A WHALE and her children’s poetry has been published in Caterpillar magazine. Her writing career began in national journalism and she still regularly broadcasts her views on anything from politics to parenthood on BBC Radio 2 and the bus.
Maz believes passionately in the power of words, the importance of stories and the necessity of kindness. She doesn’t believe in horoscopes, teeth-whitening toothpaste or anyone who relies on the word “literally”.
