MY REVIEW:

“Evil demanded little of me – it merely asked me to remain silent, to do nothing. And I complied.” 

Imagine waking up one morning to discover there is a wall separating your city. You are on one side, and your sick baby is in hospital on the other side. You can’t reach him because guards patrol the wall day and night and shoot anyone who tries to cross. That is the heartbreaking reality facing Lisette when she wakes up on August 13th, 1961 to find the Berlin Wall now completely separates east and west Berlin. She is in the east, whilst her sick baby boy is in hospital in the west. What would you do? If you’re Lisette’s daughter, Ely, then you start concocting a plan to cross the border and rescue your little brother. But can she succeed where so many others have failed?

Powerful, poignant, haunting, courageous, and mesmerising, The Silence in Between is an extraordinary debut. Having the opportunity to read breathtaking books that feel like a watershed moment, such as this one, is one of the biggest privileges of being a book blogger. A story of family, love, loss, fear and hope, the story is set across dual timelines: the end of World War II and the months following the construction of the Berlin Wall. Exquisitely written and rich with historic detail, this is a book you live, not simply read. The fact that all of the things that happen on these pages are taken from real moments in history makes it all the more moving, compelling and terrifying. It is a master-class in bringing history to life, Josie Ferguson’s meticulous research immerses you in the story completely and I tried to soak in every word as the story washed over me. 

“Like so many, I chose to be ignorant of the events that were unfolding. I was like a small girl plugging my ears with my finger tips and singing loudly to drown out the voices of truth. I was present, yet stupidly unaware.”

It is a challenge to write about a significant period in history and Ms. Ferguson decided to write about two of them, but she excels. There is an overwhelming sense of malevolence and an undercurrent of fear hints at danger lurking in every corner in both timelines.  There’s feelings of isolation as you don’t know who you can trust or who might betray you, and we see how circumstances can lead ordinary people to do desperate and despicable things to survive. It was hard to read at times, especially when addressing the brutality German women were subjected to by the Russians in the aftermath of World War II. But while she writes with honesty, it is never graphic or gruesome, only showing us what is needed to understand the characters. Unbearably human and heart-rending, it explores the worst of humanity but also gives us a glimpse of hope; that this too shall pass and better times will come. 

“Everyone’s songs will change for ever with today’s news, and though I know it’s only my imagination that creates the sound of their music, I still find the cacophony of their panic deafening.”

Ms. Ferguson explores a variety of themes in this book. The three most recurring themes are trauma, mother/daughter relationships, and music. These allowed us to forge a very real connection with the characters despite them living in extraordinary times. The mother/daughter bond is explored most obviously through Lisette and Ely, who narrate the story. They have always had a difficult and distant relationship that Ely struggled to understand. And while they seem very different on the surface, they are actually quite alike and are both strong, determined and gutsy women who will go to great lengths for those they love. The two also share a love of music, which is a topic woven through every facet of the story. Lisette used to play piano while Ely hears music personal to everyone she meets. This was a beautiful addition to the story and I was fascinated by the idea that we all carry our own theme tune that tells people more about us than words ever could. Sadly this shared love only tears them apart even more as Lisette has stopped playing the piano for reasons unknown and doesn’t like Ely to talk about her gift. The reasons for all of this are revealed slowly, as secrets in Lisette’s past are revealed and we explore the curse of generational trauma. 

Atmospheric, emotional, tense, and unflinching, The Silence in Between is an unmissable and unforgettable debut that I can’t recommend highly enough. This will be in my top books of the year and is a contender for my overall favourite book of 2024. Josie Ferguson is a talent to watch and I can’t wait to see what she writes next.

MEET THE AUTHOR:

Born in Sweden to a family of writers and readers, Josie Ferguson moved to Scotland when she was two. She returned to Sweden in her twenties, where she completed a vocational degree in Clinical Psychology (MSc). Upon graduating, she moved to London to pursue a career in publishing, something she had dreamed about since delving into fictional worlds as a child, hidden under the duvet with a torch.

She later moved to Asia in search of an adventure and a bit more sun and currently works as a freelance book editor in Singapore, where she lives with her husband and two young children. While training to become a clinical psychologist, Josie learned about the complexity of human nature, something she explores as a writer. She believes books about the past can change the future and she aspires to write as many as possible. The Silence in Between is her debut.

MY REVIEW:

“Maybe I am a monster, but I can’t stop now. Not now I’m so close. I could never live with myself if he walked free.”

Evelyn and Tobias Moore’s world is shattered when their son, Joshua, is killed in a hit and run. Now, Aaron Alexander – the man responsible – is being released after serving 11 years but for Joshua’s mother that isn’t justice. She wants revenge; and she’s been counting down the days until she can make that happen. Now, that time has finally come. But as Evelyn and Tobias embark on their journey, they are on two opposing sides: Evelyn dead set on revenge, while Tobias wants to save his wife from herself. Their road trip towards vengeance and murder quickly becomes a nail-biting game of cat and mouse. Can there be redemption?

“I’ve got to do what I was afraid to do before. I’ve got to try and stop her.” 

He’s done it again! Unbearably tense, twisty, unpredictable and heartfelt, Redemption is another five-star read from the King of dilemma thriller, Jack Jordan. A master-class in thriller writing, this book has it all: action, suspense, foreboding and violence, but also heart, grief, rage, bitterness and hope. The story is told in five parts that begin with flashbacks to Evelyn and Tobias’ life in happier times. These sections were so emotional, emphasising the magnitude of their loss and how much their lives have changed since Joshua’s death. There is such a stark contrast that I’d have believed you if you’d told me I was reading about two different couples. Jordan makes you feel ALL the feelings, expertly conveying the nuances of grief and how that can look different for everyone. I got book whiplash as I would be close to crying one moment and on the edge of my seat the next, holding on tight with the breakneck speed of the chase.

“I didn’t realise how all-encompassing grief could be. How tyrannical the rage against injustice would be on my thinking…”

Jordan’s characters are always nuanced, relatable and deeply human. One of the things I love most about his book is his expertise at writing anti-heroes you can’t help but root for. He weaves their anguish, pain, dilemmas and humanity into the narrative, highlighting all the shades of grey and making it possible to see yourself in their shoes. Evelyn and Aaron are perfect examples of this. Evelyn’s every word, thought and action is raw, sizzling with white-hot rage, resentment, hatred, bitterness, pain and grief.  She can’t see straight for the need for vengeance and her need to exact what she determines to be justice overwhelms everything else. And as a mother I could understand it. I’m not a vengeful person but I can’t imagine how I would cope in her position and I had a lot of empathy for her, even if I was rooting for Tobias to stop her before she went too far. Meanwhile, Aaron seems like the obvious villain of the story, yet Jordan makes him human with his tragic backstory and deep remorse. I ended up really liking him and rooting for him to survive. Then there is Tobias. Tobias is a broken man who not only lost his only child, but also his wife the night Joshua died. Jordan really makes you feel his heartache and loneliness. His dilemma is palpable as he is torn between helping Evelyn and saving her from herself, even if it means helping the man who killed his child. It was an impossible situation and I felt for him even more as he is thrown into becoming someone he doesn’t recognise in his quest to stop Evelyn.

Intense, heart-rending and bingeable, Redemption is another unmissable thriller from Mr. Jordan. Read it now!

MY REVIEW:

Sometimes, finding your place in the world is the greatest puzzle of all.

Sometimes you only have to look at a book and know you’re going to love it. The Fellowship of Puzzlemakers was everything I’d hoped for and more. Cryptic, quirky and uplifting, this magnificent debut is an absolute gem. An ode to friendship, community, love and finding your place in the world, this hit the sweet spot where you want to devour it whole but also never want it to end. 

Clayton Stumper is not your average 25-year-old. He was abandoned at birth and found in a hatbox on the steps of The Fellowship of Puzzlemakers by its founder, Pippa, and has been raised there ever since. But when Pippa passes away she leaves behind one final puzzle to be solved: the mystery of Clayton’s parentage. Can Clayton follow the clues to finally solve the puzzle that has eluded even the brightest minds of the country?

Debut novelist Samuel Burr has set the bar sky-high with this phenomenal debut and I will be buying anything he writes from now on. It is cleverly written, shrewdly plotted and steadily paced, keeping the reader guessing with misdirection and surprising revelations. The story moves smoothly between dual timelines and narrators, following Clayton on his journey of self-discovery in the present, while the past details the Fellowship’s conception and events leading up to the day Clayton was discovered on their doorstep. But what I loved most about this book was how Burr intricately weaves puzzles into every aspect of the story, including making it so the reader can play along and try to solve the clues alongside the characters. But, don’t worry if you don’t like puzzles, because you can also flip to the answers at the back. I’m a puzzle fan and enjoyed trying to solve the clues, but I did use the answer sheet for some of them, too. 

Burr has created an eclectic cast of wonderful and fascinating characters who fit together like puzzle pieces despite coming from different boxes. I enjoyed their friendships that slowly blossomed into a found family. Clayton and Pippa were excellent protagonists who were both likeable, relatable, easy to root for, and had compelling backstories. I loved seeing Clayton slowly emerge from his self-imposed cocoon like a butterfly as he followed Pippa’s clues and enjoyed looking for ones that might be hidden in the flashbacks. Pippa was a nurturing, caring and supportive character, and I loved how she brought everybody together by creating a place where they could do what they love without judgement. It reminded me of finding my people in the book community, and when Pippa and the Puzzlers spoke about how puzzling makes them feel, it was as if I was speaking about my love of reading.

Charming, warm, joyful, and addictive, The Fellowship of Puzzlemakers is feel-good fiction at its finest. Add this to your TBR now!

MEET THE AUTHOR:

Samuel studied at Westminster Film School and now works as an author and freelance TV executive. He has developed and produced popular-factual shows including Channel 4’s Genderquake and The Greatest Shows on Earth, BBC Two’s Eight Go Rallying and The Secret Life of Cleaners, and the BAFTA-nominated Secret Life of 4-Year-Olds.

A documentary he shot inside a retirement village when he was eighteen years old launched his career in television and inspired his debut novel, The Fellowship of Puzzlemakers. Samuel’s writing was shortlisted for Penguin’s WriteNow scheme and in 2021 he graduated from the Faber Academy.

In his spare time, Samuel volunteers for the elderly charity Age UK. He lives in London with his partner Tom and their cat Muriel.

MY REVIEW:

I’m a sucker for a crime series and In the Blink of an Eye is the first book in a crime series like nothing you’ve read before.

DCS Kat Frank is picked to lead a pilot programme where she will be partnered with AIDE (Artificial Intelligence Detective Entity) Lock. Kat isn’t a fan of AI or Lock, but when the two cold cases they are investigating become active investigations and things take a personal turn, she finds Lock is the only one willing to help her. 

Fast-paced, tense, twisty and gripping, this is an exciting and original take on the familiar detective buddy trope. I’m a big fan of these kinds of books but always enjoy finding something a bit different and Jo Callaghan’s debut really does stand out from the crowd. It explores whether AI and logic are superior to human experience and gut feelings when it comes to solving crimes, the truth about loss, and what it means to be human. The story is narrated by Kat but every so often we have a section that is narrated by an unknown man who is being held captive. His terror leaps from the pages and as the story gets darker the tension goes through the roof, my heart racing as I tried to predict what would happen next. 

I’ll admit that, like Kat, I had some apprehension about a robot detective. I needn’t have worried. In Lock Jo Callaghan has created a character who is obviously AI while also breathing the right amount of life and humanity into him to make him compelling. I liked that Kat is his total opposite and is a no-nonsense detective who relies on her instincts. I related to her in many ways on a personal level and enjoyed discovering more about her backstory. I enjoyed the banter between her and Lock and watching them learn how to work together rather than being at odds. The rest of Kat’s team were equally as well written and I am looking forward to returning to the whole cast of characters in the next instalment next month. 

Thought-provoking, thrilling and addictive, In the Blink of an Eye is a strong start to what promises to be a great new series. Highly recommended.

MY REVIEW:

Meet Frank and Red… a curmudgeonly old man with agoraphobia who lives with the ghost of his late wife and a friendly six-year-old boy with a very active imagination who strike up an unlikely friendship that starts over their shared garden fence. This is one of those books you know you’re going to love from the first page, capturing my heart and soul immediately and making me laugh out loud from the second page. A truly magnificent debut, it has gone straight onto my list of all-time favourite books. 

Frank and Red is a book for everyone. No matter what genre you usually read and the kind of books you usually don’t bother with, I think you will love this book and its characters. Reading it feels like a warm hug, the gorgeous story enveloping you in its arms and making everything feel better for a time. This is Matt Coyne’s first fiction book and I’m an instant fan. It’s brilliantly written, Matt Coyne filling the pages with raw honesty, cracking comedy, heartfelt emotion, insightful social commentary, and an irresistible charm. It’s one of those books you both want to devour whole and want to savour because you never want it to end and I couldn’t stop thinking about it whenever I wasn’t reading. 

What am I going to do without Frank and Red? It is impossible not to fall for these characters completely and they stole my heart from the first page. Achingly real, compelling and memorable, they come to life in vivid technicolour. Frank is a blunt, brash and bull-headed old bugger who has shut the world out ever since his wife Marcie’s death. He lives alone, apart from Marcie’s ghost, and is terrified to go beyond his front gate in case she isn’t there when he comes back. And then there’s Red, the adorable, outgoing and precocious little boy who moves in next door to Frank with his mum, Sarah, and turns Frank’s world upside down. This unlikely duo taught each other so much and I loved their friendship. It was an absolute joy to read and I’ve not stopped thinking about them since I finished the book. 

One of my favourite things about this book is how Coyne doesn’t diminish children or their experiences. Instead Coyne highlights how very real and important their stresses and emotions are whatever their age. For example, Red is trying to come to terms with his parents’ divorce, moving home and school, trying to make new friends, bullying, and his dad’s new girlfriend and her annoying twins. Coyne perfectly balances Red’s childish innocence and honesty with the weights on his shoulders, reminding us of the importance of listening to our children when they tell us their problems rather than brushing them off as unimportant compared to adult worries.

MY REVIEW:

Leah lives on a quiet street with her husband Cain and their life is picture perfect. But when 18-year-old Charlotte knocks on their door saying she’s looking for her biological parents the walls start to crumble and long-held secrets threaten to finally be unearthed…

OMG. This one hell of rollercoaster ride! Tense, twisty and thrilling, I stayed up reading this one late into the night and read it in under a day. Carla Kovach is an autobuy author for me and I know whenever I read one of her books she’s delivering a riveting thriller that I’ll love. And while I’m a big fan of her Gina Harte series, I do look forward to her standalones so I couldn’t wait to dive into this one. 

Fast paced, cleverly written and cunningly plotted, this has secrets, lies, suspicion and loss. All the relationships are dysfunctional, creating one big cluster of  toxicity and mistrust. I couldn’t even be sure about Leah, vacillating between believing what she was saying and thinking she was hiding something more. It is a complex and intricately woven maze of trouble that didn’t go in the directions I thought it would AT ALL. The twists and turns kept coming, deviating into completely unexpected directions again and again until I finally stopped trying to figure things out and decided to just enjoy the ride.

So if you love thrillers that make you feel lots of emotion, keep you on your toes and surprise you, then this is a must read.

REVIEW: The Women Who Wouldn’t Leave by Victoria Scott

MY REVIEW:

The Women Who Wouldn’t Leave is uplit at its finest. Full of heart, hope, and humour, it is a remarkable tale about the power of human connection and community, and the resilience of the human spirit. 

The story follows two very different women – Connie and Matilda – as they fight to save their homes in a small, peaceful Worcester village. Matilda lives a secluded but contented life with only her menagerie of animals for company. Connie is living back at home with her mum as she tries to recover from trauma. The two are reluctantly thrown together when Connie is asked to care for Matilda’s animals while she recovers in hospital from a fall, and though reluctant at first, she soon discovers they help her to heal. When Matilda returns home the two women develop an unlikely friendship which they use to bring their entire community together in order to try and save their homes from greedy developers.

I became an instant fan of Victoria Scott after reading her debut novel, Patience, and had high hopes for this book. She exceeded them all. The Women Who Wouldn’t Leave is a beautifully written story that I got lost in. The characters and community felt authentic and were a joy to read, and the plot kept me hooked with its elements of mystery that left me desperate to know what secrets Connie and Matilda were hiding. I was addicted and devoured it quickly, reading it in under a day. 

One of the things I love most about Victoria’s books is that she always includes a character with some kind of health condition – whether it is physical or mental health. In this book she explores themes of trauma, anxiety and depression, all things I’ve personally dealt with and I appreciate the way she writes them with such sensitivity while also making them achingly real. She also takes you on an emotional rollercoaster as she fills the books with very real human emotion and experiences, which in this book include love, loss, loneliness, anxiety, regret and fear. But overall, it will lift your spirits, warm your heart, and restore your faith in community. 

Narrators Matilda and Connie seem very different at first glance, but have more in common than they care to admit. These fractured and flawed women have put up a wall around themselves to try and protect themselves from further pain. They are both stubborn, spiky, solitary, and untrusting, fearing what will happen if they let people in. But I loved these characters, jagged edges and all, but there was a special place in my heart for Matilda. I loved their relationship, their banter, and how they helped each other to live a fuller life once again. There were also some great background characters though and I have to give a shout-out to Connie’s mum, Ellen, who was such a kind, caring and sweet character who perfectly balanced the spikier narrators.

Warm, witty, moving, and intriguing, The Women Who Wouldn’t Leave is one of those books that warms you from the inside out.

MY REVIEW:

The Little Italian Hotel is a charming story about love, friendship, and healing broken hearts. We are transported to the sunny climes of Italy as radio relationship expert Ginny Splinter travels to Hotel Splendido with four other heartbroken strangers to try and heal her heart after the sudden demise of her twenty-five year marriage. As the group spend the next few weeks hiking in the hills, exploring the beauty of the surrounding scenery, and dance the night away, they forge unlikely friendships and embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing. 

Full of heart, hope, and laughter, this uplifting story ticks all the boxes for the ideal summer read. Phaedra Patrick transported me to Italy so vividly that I could feel the sun on my skin and taste the olive oil. But it is the characters who are its essence. Each of them are multilayered and compelling, with even the hotel owner and his daughter needing secret heartaches healed. I wanted to know more about them all and enjoyed slowly peeling away the layers of each character to discover the secrets hiding underneath. I had a particular soft spot for Edna, the curmudgeonly old lady with a heart-rending backstory and oodles of character that leapt from the pages. They really were an eclectic bunch, but it was great to watch as their differences melted away, friendships grew. and they began to open up to one another, allowing them to start rediscovering the joy that life still has to offer. 

Sunny, lighthearted, moving and hopeful, this is the perfect escapist book to read in your back garden or by the pool this summer.

MEET THE AUTHOR:

I’ve always wanted to write books but came to it the long way around. I originally studied art and marketing and then worked as a stained glass artist, film festival organiser and communications manager. I won several awards for my short stories and have now written six novels, four of which became USA Today bestsellers. I live with my family in Saddleworth, UK, where I write full time.

My debut novel, The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper, was translated into twenty five languages worldwide and was optioned by a major Hollywood film studio.

MY REVIEW:

Rona Halsall is the Queen of the twisty, morally complex domestic thriller. One of my go-to authors, I don’t even read the synopsis anymore as she never fails to deliver a taut and tense story filled with unexpected twists. Her latest novel, The Bigamist, is no different, keeping me on my toes from start to finish. 

The story is told in three parts by Emma. When it opens, she is eight months pregnant and excitedly anticipating the birth of her first child. But a call to her husband, Sam, turns her world upside down when another woman answers and she claims that SHE is actually his wife. But we soon learn that there is even more to this story; Sam isn’t the only one keeping secrets, and Emma also has something to hide… 

Addictive, emotionally-charged, and surprising, I couldn’t put this down and flew through it in just a few hours. Well written, cleverly plotted and immersive, it had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. And the twists. Wow. This was jam-packed with so many of them that I got book whiplash! Every time I thought I might know where the story was going, Halsall delivered another jaw-dropping twist that forced me to reevaluate everything I thought I knew. How does she do that?! And that ending…Omg! I’m still reeling. 

I’ve talked before about Halsall’s talent for writing morally complex characters that are easy to relate to, and Emma is a perfect example. As a reader we are put in her shoes, making us feel everything she does so we can empathise with what she’s going through. By giving us that connection to her I felt less judgemental when she made some of her desperate decisions and continued to root for her even after learning her secrets. And speaking of her secret – I did not see that coming! Even with the breadcrumbs Halsall sprinkled into the story it completely blindsided me. 

Emma and Sam’s whirlwind relationship is full of red flags and love bombing. Even without knowing he was a bigamist from the start, I would have been suspicious and wished I could tell Emma to run. Through their relationship, Halsall explores coercive control and reminds us how easy it is to get so caught up in the first flush of love that we ignore the signs something isn’t right. We see how anyone can find themselves in that position and how things can snowball into the crazy mess Emma finds herself in. 

Dramatic, gripping and unpredictable, I highly recommend this first-rate thriller.

A multiple point of view and dual timeline novel, The Final Party takes place in Sorrento, Italy in August 2019. Six friends have got together for the fortieth birthday of one of their group, but tensions are high as four of the friends battle with their conscience over secrets they have been keeping for eighteen years. Secrets surrounding the night that another one of their group was attacked and left forever changed by her inability to remember who attacked her or why. What is it her friends know about that night? And which one of the group will end up dead before their celebrations are over?

A.A. Chaudhuri just gets better with each book. Tense, twisty and totally thrilling, she has delivered a first-rate thriller that will knock your socks off! This is suspense writing at its best; a seven-layer cake of a thriller where each slice holds something unexpected. And I couldn’t get enough. From the start there is a sense of something dark and sinister. Of overwhelming dread, long-held secrets and deception. And you can tell that these secrets have the power to blow up their lives if revealed. Chaudhuri expertly drip-feeds the reader little pieces of the puzzle before whipping the rug away from under us every time I thought I’d got things figured out. The uncertainty only heightened the tension and I was on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. 

When a multi-narrative thriller is done right it is one of my favourite tropes, and this is sheer perfection. The characters are a group of fractured, flawed and relatable people who, quite frankly, are a train-wreck. But they are compelling and I couldn’t help but feel totally invested in their twisted web of friendship, secrets and lies. It was soon apparent that each one of them holds different pieces of this puzzle and no-one has the full picture, not even the ones who think they do. They are eaten up by guilt, regret and the fear of exposure; of one of the secrets being revealed and triggering a domino effect that would see their lives explode in a fiery blaze of betrayal. I really felt for Padma, who is still so eaten up by not knowing the truth about the night that changed her life. Knowing that those closest to her have held the keys to answering her questions all along yet chose to keep her in the dark only compounds the devastation. But even in my wildest theories I didn’t suspect the true horror that was waiting to be uncovered.

Unpredictable, intricate and suspenseful, The Final Party is a nerve-shredding thriller you won’t be able to put down. This is one any self-respecting thriller-lover HAS to have on their TBR.

MEET THE AUTHOR:

A.A. Chaudhuri is a former City lawyer, turned thriller writer, who lives in Surrey with her family.

Once a highly ranked British junior tennis player, competing in the national championships and a member of the national squad, she went on to tour the women’s professional satellite circuit as a teenager and achieved a world ranking of 650.

After returning to full-time education, she gained a BA Honours 2:1 in History at University College London, and a commendation in both the Graduate Diploma in Law and Legal Practice Course at the London College of Law, before training as a solicitor at City firm Norton Rose and then practising as a commercial litigator at two other City firms, Kendall Freeman and Travers Smith.
