MY REVIEW:

Gripping, intense, suspenseful and surprising, Geneva is a high octane thrill ride where no-one is what they seem and you don’t know who to trust. 

The story follows Sarah Collier, a nobel-prize winning scientist and her husband, Daniel, who is also a neuroscientist. Sarah has been invited to be the guest of honour at a prestigious biotech conference but she’s reluctant to accept as she has recently been showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease, the same illness that affected her father. But Daniel persuades her to go, reminding her that the technology being unveiled at the conference could revolutionise medicine and maybe even save her life. So, the couple head to snowy Geneva and are treated to five-star luxury. But while they are there Sarah’s symptoms worsen, events spiral out of control, and a controversial blogger is covering the story, leaving Sarah unsure if she can trust even herself. 

Fast-paced, heart-poundingly tense, and cleverly choreographed, with this sensational debut, Richard Armitage showcases himself as a thriller writer to watch. He drew me into the story from the start, balancing the tension and heavy science with lighter moments perfectly and keeping you on your toes with an electrifying game of cat and mouse and twists I never saw coming. Armitage’s evocative imagery and attention to detail really set the scene, and combined with narration by the author himself, brings the story to life so vividly it feels like you’re there. 

An exhilarating and unpredictable thriller not to be missed, I can’t wait for the TV adaptation and whatever Armitage writes next.

MY REVIEW:

Lexie enjoys a nomadic life, living out of a suitcase as she goes from place to place. But when her estranged dad, Richard, dies, she is shocked to learn that he has left her half of his travel company in Bath. Not only that, but she can only sell after working with her business partner Theo for a year. The pair clash instantly but it feels like a small price to pay for selling at the end of the year. But it soon becomes clear that while they can’t stand each other, there is also a sizzling chemistry that they are finding hard to resist.

Home Again For Christmas is a heartwarming enemies-to-lovers festive romance that explores themes of belonging, the meaning of home, and complexities of grief. This was a joy to read over the Christmas period and once I finally got time to just sit with it, I couldn’t put this book down. Emily Stone’s writing is moving and enthralling and I loved the travel aspect of the story; how Stone explored different sights and traditions in other European countries at various times of the year. It was well researched and made me want to experience them for myself. Especially the Fete du Citron in France. 

But what I loved most about this book is its richly drawn and compelling characters. I love a good enemies-to-lovers romance, and I was rooting  for Lexie and Theo from the beginning. They had all the wit, chemistry and venom that I enjoy in that trope and enjoyed trying to predict what would happen next. I also enjoyed Lexie’s friendship with Fran and her blossoming relationship with her sister, Rachel. The latter is just one of the more complex issues the story explored, also exploring how Lexie works through her complicated grief and how she dealt with discovering different sides to her father’s personality after his death that don’t fit the box she’d put him in. 

A wonderful feel-good festive romance, I highly recommend this book.

Hello, I’m Emily! If you’ve found this page then welcome, and thanks so much for showing an interest in my writing.

I have written three books now, which feels surreal! My latest novel is Love, Holly in the US and The Christmas Letter in the UK. My books always revolve around the Christmas period, but span the course of a whole year and more. They also deal with love – and grief, in one way or another. I think I put a part of me in every book – as I’m sure every author does – and my newest book is no exception. The main character – Holly – often does the wrong thing for the right reasons, and that is a situation I’ve found myself in! And with three sisters myself, writing about the sister love – and difficulties – in this book felt personal at times!

My other two novels are One Last Gift – a story of finding yourself when you feel that’s impossible, and of the love between siblings – and Always, in December. As my debut novel, it will always be one close to my heart. Whilst very different from me, the protagonist, Josie is suffering with a grief that I know all too well – losing a parent/parents at a young age, and having to carry that grief into adulthood, long after it’s supposedly ‘gone away’. I lost my mum when I was seven, and I still think about her even now, in my thirties – and that’s something that Josie and I share. Max, too, is suffering his own kind of grief, and that’s something that he has to learn to deal with. But whilst the novel is about grief, and learning to live with that, it’s also about falling in love, and about learning to be brave, even when your life doesn’t feel quite right yet – even if it feels like it will never quite be right!

I wrote my first two novels in a glorious house in Chepstow, living with my sister and my two nieces. My third book I wrote on the English coastline in Cornwall – so I consider myself very lucky!

MY REVIEW:

An anonymous ghostwriter travels to Maine to ghostwrite the autobiography of Dorothy Gibson, the former senator that everyone is talking about following her recent loss in the Presidential race against a Donald Trump-esque opponent. Not long into the assignment, one of Dorothy’s neighbours is found dead in the bath. And while it is at first assumed to be suicide, evidence later points to murder prompting Dorothy and the ghostwriter to team up to try and solve the crime. 

Funny, bold, twisty and compelling, The Busy Body is an entertaining cosy mystery with retro vibes. Set in a large country house in winter, the book has a warm and festive atmosphere that I enjoyed. The anonymous ghostwriter narrates the story, recounting the events surrounding the murder and investigation and often breaking the fourth wall to talk directly to the reader. But the book’s greatest strength in my opinion is its characters.  There’s the sarcastic and gossipy ghostwriter, the smart and sassy former senator, a grumpy policeman, a hard-to-resist gorgeous bodyguard and an array of compelling background characters. There’s an abundance of motives and suspects, making it hard to predict where the story will go next and just who killed Dorothy’s neighbour. I was hooked and kept guessing right up until the big reveal. It feels like Kemper Donovan has set this book up to be the start of a new series and I hope it is as I can see a lot of potential for the ghostwriter to become embroiled in a lot of intriguing situations thanks to her job. 

A fun old-timey mystery perfect for anyone who likes detective stories, I highly recommend this book.

I’ve lived in Los Angeles for most of my adult life. Starting out, I worked at a wonderful company called Circle of Confusion (no, really) representing film/television screenwriters and comic books. My very first client wrote the screenplay for the feature film Hanna, released by Focus Features in 2011. (If you haven’t seen it, watch it; you won’t be sorry.) Before that I went to college at Stanford University (with apologies to the Bay Area, I am definitely more of a SoCal person), and law school at Harvard. Technically, I am a retired lawyer, which means I passed the New York Bar and then immediately switched my status to “retired” to avoid fees and continuing education requirements….

I began writing my first novel, The Decent Proposal, when I was still a manager. After an extremely long gestational period and an even longer process acquiring representation and then selling the book for publication, I turned to writing full-time. Around the same time, I also began a side project with my dear friend, Catherine Brobeck. Together we created the podcast All About Agatha, devoted to the one and only Agatha Christie. Tragically, Catherine passed away at the end of 2021, and I have continued on with the podcast solo. It was my work on All About Agatha that inspired me to write my own mystery series, which is currently being published by Kensington Books. 

I am married, and my husband and I have two daughters who keep us extremely busy. When I’m not with them, or chattering into a microphone, or staring at a laptop with my head in my hands, I enjoy doing things that have a more obvious/tangible/short-term payoff such as running and attempting to play the violin (emphasis on the attempt).

When the snow falls, she will be free…

Decadent, dreamlike, moving and original, Upon a Frosted Star is an enchanting tale perfect for the winter days. A reimagining of The Great Gatsby merged with Swan Lake, M. A. Kuzniar transports us to the roaring 1920s for her sophomore novel which tells the story of Forster, a reclusive artist living by the lake and his swan wife, Detta. 

Moving between timelines and perspectives, this unusual romance unfolds slowly, pulling us into their strange world of hedonistic parties, ballet and vanishing performers. It is a story imbued with magic, wonder, yearning, and a menacing edge, staying true to the darkness of the original fairy tale. Kuzniar’s magnificent storytelling and evocative imagery bring the story to life, vividly describing the frigid, frosted landscape, extravagant parties, the ballet and the streets of Paris. But the most vivid of all were the descriptions of Della’s agonising transformations that I felt in my own bones and Forster’s heartbreaking yearning for his love when the ground is no longer dusted with snow. I was transfixed and totally lost myself in this deliciously dark fairytale.

MY REVIEW:

Molly the maid is one of my favourite characters and I’m a big fan of this series, so I was thrilled when this Christmas novella was announced. The story is set about a year after the events of book two as Molly is gearing up for her fifth Christmas with her hunky boyfriend, Juan. But her plans are thrown awry with a new mystery to solve: what is it that has everyone at the Regency Grand Hotel whispering in the hallways?

Warm, cosy and compelling, The Mistletoe Mystery was a delightful quick festive read. I loved the flashbacks to Molly’s childhood Christmases and seeing more of her memories of her grandmother. The answer to the mystery was obvious to me but I still enjoyed how it unraveled and watching Molly discover the truth for herself.

Charming and heartwarming, it was a joy to spend the festive season with Molly and her friends. This delightful festive novella is perfect for fans of the series.

MY REVIEW:

Picking up a few years after the events of book one, The Next Mrs Parrish takes us back to Bishops Harbor. Amber Patterson-Parrish is enjoying a life of luxury. But with her husband, Jackson, in prison, money is running out. And his impending release means she’ll have to spend time with the man she manipulated. 

Meanwhile, Jackson’s first wife, Daphne, now lives in California with their daughters. After years of abuse she’s finally free and has sworn never to return to Bishop’s Harbor but when her eldest daughter threatens to run away, she agrees to return for the summer. Jackson is claiming to be a changed man. But Daphne knows better than to trust anything he says. 

As Daphne attempts to navigate co-parenting and Amber makes plans for a different life, a ghost from Amber’s past comes back to haunt her and is intent on revenge. What follows is a gripping game of cat and mouse where everyone has a plan, no-one knows who to trust, and things won’t end well for at least one of them…

I was consumed by this tense, twisty and riveting tale of revenge and devoured it in one sitting. Expertly written, cleverly plotted and intricately woven, Liv Constantine have crafted a story that is even better than the first book.  I loved how everyone is plotting against each other, has no idea who they can trust, and is double-crossing one another. As a reader it was also hard to predict and kept me on the edge of my seat. 

What makes this book so good for me is the characters. Amber and Jackson are such despicable people that it makes you rage and root for their undoing. They made my blood boil and I was furious that they seemed to win again and again. I  had to keep reading in the hope that one of the good guys would come good in the end. Daphne and Daisy-Ann were flawed but good characters and I was totally in their corners at every step. I felt a particular connection to Daphne as I also escaped an abusive marriage many years ago and was cheering her on as she healed and built a new life. She felt very real and the authors did a brilliant job of writing her character.  However, I didn’t like everything she did.  I won’t give details because I don’t do spoilers, but I will say that some of her actions made me want to shake her and scream ‘don’t do it’, however much I understood them. The authors wrote her character really well and she felt so familiar and real. 

Heart-poundingly tense, fast-paced and bingeable, I highly recommend this superb thriller.

Scalpel sharp, forbidding, gleaming with malice and full of unreliable characters, Ruth Kelly had me on a knife edge from the intriguing prologue to the shocking finale. For me, this was a very emotional read. I have multiple chronic pain conditions, including Fibromyalgia, which is the condition that Martyn, the boy they are looking for, has. I’ll admit, I had to stop reading and wait until I was in the right headspace to carry on, as a book about promises to heal chronic pain is quite triggering for me. And, let’s be honest, some authors get the tone wrong when they write about chronic pain. But Kelly has created a story that is full of empathy for people who live with chronic pain, and is disparaging of the snake oil salesmen touting their miracle cures. She got the tone of desperation we can feel because of our pain just right; so much so that I was moved to tears a few times when Martyn and Florence talked about how they felt living every day in pain. 

One of my favourite things about this book is the setting. Kelly has created an evocative sense of place, using the remoteness of the Swiss Alps to create a nerve-shredding atmosphere from the moment Hollie arrives. This is merged with the mystery, hints of secrets and flawed characters to create an overwhelming tension and increasing sense of danger that had me on tenterhooks. I needed to know what had happened to Martyn, if Ariel really was the charlatan that Hollie believes she is, and just what happened to make Hollie so obsessed with bringing Ariel down? Kelly tells the story from the perspective of Hollie, Florence and Martyn; moving between timelines and narrators; the secrets they are hiding are brought to the surface; the tension rising to a crescendo that sees the shocking truth of the retreat finally revealed. 

Suspenseful, pacy and full of twists, this is one of those books where you think you know what’s going to happen, but you really have no idea. So prepare yourself for a heart-stopping thrill-ride you won’t forget.

MY REVIEW:

Bristol Keats and her two sisters live in the smalltown of Bowskeep and are struggling to keep afloat following the death of their parents. She may be the middle sister, but Bristol is undeniably the alpha sister, protecting them and taking charge. So when she receives a letter from  someone claiming to be her father’s aunt who is offering to help them, she feels it her responsibility to meet her. But the meeting isn’t what she expected and Bristol discovers that everything she’s believed about herself and her family is a lie. Her parents were actually from another realm called the Danu Nation. A magical realm inhabited by otherworldly creatures that terrify Bristol at first. Not only that, but she also learns that her father’s death may have been faked. Suddenly, it seems like all the years that Bristol and her family have been running from a mysterious force is beginning to make sense. Wanting to know more, find out the truth and hoping to save her father, Bristol agrees to a pact. She will travel to Danu Nation and carry out a task in exchange for a financial reward. After arriving in this dangerous and unfamiliar world, Bristol agrees to another, even deadlier bargain. This time with Tyghan, the fae king. The two slowly get closer but unbeknownst to Bristol, Tyghan is the reason her parents fled Danu Nation and have been running all these years.  And he is just as determined as she is to find her father, but has more sinister motives…

Layered, complex, fantastical and compelling, The Courting of Bristol Keats is a dazzling romatasy told on an epic scale. With evocative imagery, wonderful storytelling and richly drawn characters, Mary E. Pearson transported me into the magnificent world she created. It’s a world of magic, fae, gods and monsters. A dangerous but intriguing world that you will get lost in. This is a pretty chonky book so it takes a while for the story to get going as Ms. Pearson builds the world and introduces us to the huge cast of characters. But it soon picks up pace and I found myself completely enthralled by the story and characters. I love a good forbidden romance, and Ms. Pearson has written this one brilliantly. There’s a strong sense of tension, longing and desire as the will-they-won’t-they romance between Bristol and Tyghan plays out. I was totally #TeamBrighan (can we make that a thing?). And that ending! It left me full of questions, desperate for more, and I can’t wait for book two.

MY REVIEW:

Renowned puzzle setter Edie O’Sullivan is surprised by a hand-delivered present six days before Christmas. When she unwraps it, Edie is even more surprised by its contents: a jigsaw box that contains six jigsaw pieces that fit together to show part of a crime scene and the message ‘Four, maybe more, will be dead by midnight on Christmas Eve, unless you can put all the pieces together and stop me.’ It is eerily signed, Rest In Pieces. 

Unable to resist a puzzle, Edie starts to try and solve the clues to stop the killer, working with her nephew, DI Sean Brand-O’Sullivan. But when a man is found close to death with a jigsaw piece in his hand, Sean is concerned that Edie is in danger and shuts her out of his investigation. But Edie won’t be stopped, and secretly continues to investigate with the help of her neighbour, Rega. As more clues arrive at Edie’s door, clues point to a secret in her past holding the key to everything. Can Edie solve the macabre mystery before it’s too late?

Mysterious, witty, dark and compelling, The Christmas Jigsaw Mystery is brilliant festive friction wrapped up in a bow of cosy crime.  With a mix of nostalgia and modern vibes, this has a gorgeous atmosphere that feels reminiscent of reading an Agatha Christie novel, this is perfect for reading snuggled under a blanket with a hot drink on a cold day. It is also the ideal Christmas read for anyone who enjoys solving puzzles. And, as one of them myself, I loved the inclusion of the different kinds of puzzles and enjoyed trying to solve them alongside Edie and Sean. Skillfully written and cleverly plotted, there are so many threads to this story that you could knit a Christmas jumper. I loved unwrapping them layer by layer and trying to predict what would happen next. But Ms. Benedict wove them together with such expertise that it kept me guessing until the big reveal. 

Eccentric, prickly and compelling, octogenarian Edie was a great protagonist. A loner whose only friend is her neighbour, Riva, we learn that Edie has a mysterious past filled with regrets. It’s a past she doesn’t want to revisit but the killer seems to know what she’s trying to keep hidden and forces her to face what she’s trying to avoid. Edie and Riva were a fun pair to read and their scenes were some of my favourite parts of the book. I also really enjoyed Edie’s relationship with her nephew, Sean, who she raised like a son after his parents’ death. Sean is a DI, which only complicates matters as he tries to juggle investigating the case with trying to keep Edie’s amateur sleuthing in check. We also see the story from the killer’s point of view, which is much darker than the rest of the book, adding an extra layer of tension that kept me on the edge of my seat. 

A gloriously cosy Christmas crime that I couldn’t put down, I highly recommend adding this to your festive reading list.

MY REVIEW:

“Witch. The word slithers from the mouth like a serpent. Drips from the tongue as thick and black as tar. We never thought of ourselves as witches, my mother and I. For this was a word invented by men. And with that brings power to those who speak it not those it describes. A word that builds gallows and pyres, turns breathing women into corpses. No, it was not a word we ever used.” 

Spellbinding, haunting, moving, fierce and empowering, Weyward is an outstanding debut that explores the threads that reach across time to connect women. 

The story is told from the perspective of three women: Altha, Violet and Kate. In 1619 Altha, who is a healer, is on trial for witchcraft after being implicated in the gruesome death of a local man. In 1942 Violet lives a suffocating life with her father and brother and rebels against what a ‘proper young lady’ should be. But her rebellion will spark a chain of events that have devastating results. And in 2019 Kate flees an abusive relationship and takes refuge in the Cumbrian cottage she inherited from her great-aunt. But as she will discover, the cottage – and her aunt – hide long-buried secrets of their own. 

Emilia Hart showcases herself as an author to watch with this incredible debut. Beautifully written, expertly crafted and intricately woven, it moves between the three narrators and timelines to slowly unveils their stories and ultimately reveals how their paths are connected. The three women at the centre of the book are strong, fierce, relatable and compelling characters. My heart went out to each of them and the terrible situations they faced but I ultimately found myself in awe of their strength and resilience. Interwoven into each woman’s story is a hint of the supernatural as Hart explores the way that women who are healers or have a deeper connection to nature have found themselves accused of witchcraft. While this is explored in each timeline, Altha’s storyline focuses most on this as she lived at the time of the witch trials and is on trial for witchcraft. 

Hart explores themes such as oppression, male violence and domestic abuse, which each woman experiences despite living centuries apart. It was a sad reminder of how so much may change, yet some things seem to stay the same and women are still battling against the same things as their ancestors centuries ago. And while this is undoubtedly a feminist book, it isn’t man-hating or a book that calls women to take revenge against men. It is simply telling the truth of what women have experienced and encouraging us to find our strength. After all, we women all have a little bit of witch in us. Thank you, Ms Hart, for the reminder.  

Powerful, witchy, bold and beguiling, Weyward is an astonishing debut not to be missed.
