MY REVIEW:

Alice Feeney has done it again! Heartsoppingly tense, unsettling, cryptic and immersive, My Husband’s Wife is an outstanding thriller and possibly her best book yet. 

It follows Eden Fox, who has recently moved to Spyglass, an enhancing old house in Hope Falls, Cornwall, with her husband, Harrison Woolf. They are hoping their move will be the fresh start they both need and it seems like life is starting to look up. But when she returns after her usual evening run nothing is as it should be. Her key doesn’t work and a woman who is eerily similar to her answers the door saying she lives there. Harrison insists the stranger is his wife and claims to have never seen Eden before. Eden desperately tries to prove her identity, sparking a chain of events that uncover long-buried secrets, deception and betrayal.

I always know when I pick up one of Alice’s books that I’m in for a treat. A thriller powerhouse, I know I’ll get an exquisitely written, twisty, layered and pacy thriller that will keep me on the edge of my seat. This was all that and more. It’s like Spaghetti Junction – the different storylines and threads interweave in unexpected ways, and it’s brimming with suspense, twists and turns. The narrative is told from multiple perspectives and moves seamlessly between timelines as Alice drops clues like breadcrumbs for us to follow. But nothing is what it seems in this book and everyone is possibly an unreliable narrator – keeping me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. And that final line! I can’t get it out of my head.

One of the things that Alice always does well is writing charismatic, flawed and relatable characters who are fun to read whether we like them or not. The abundance of unreliable narrators means there are no clear heroes or villains, ramping up the tension and making me second guess everything they said and did. My favourite character was Birdy, a reclusive woman from London who returns to Hope Falls following life-changing diagnosis and unexpected inheritance. Birdy was the comedic relief in the book and although we know there are things she’s hiding, I did feel like I could trust her more than a lot of the other characters.

A must read for anyone who loves clever and riveting thrillers.

MY REVIEW:

Multi-layered, tender, tense and claustrophobic, Room 706 is an explosive debut. Morally ambiguous and thought provoking it follows Kate, who has just enjoyed a day of illicit love-making with her lover, James. As he showers she turns on the TV in the hotel room and the news is reporting a story about a siege under way at a hotel. Horrorstruck, Kate realises it is their hotel. Now, instead of making her way home and collecting her children from school, she’s stuck in a hotel room with her lover. How will she explain this to her husband? And will they make it out of there alive?

How on earth is this a debut? Ellie Levenson writes like a seasoned veteran. Her storytelling is nuanced, raw and sensitive, her characters achingly human and flawed, her plot cleverly choreographed and tightly paced, and her twists surprising. I’ll admit that I went into this expecting a thriller, but while it is full of fear and tension, it isn’t a thriller. Levenson describes it as ‘fiction for the clever but tired woman’, which is the perfect description. I was in Ellie’s thrall, glued to the pages as we moved between events in the hotel room and flashbacks that tell the story of both of Kate’s relationships. And that ending! I almost threw the book across the room and can see why so many people are talking about it.

The moral ambiguity of this story is at the heart of its charm. Kate loves her husband and her affair is simply self-care for her. An escape from the monotony of marriage and motherhood. She recognises how wrong it is but also isn’t willing to give it up. And whatever your thoughts on the morality of her choices, it’s impossible not to like and root for this lady and feel sad for her as she’s trapped in a terrifying situation totally unsupported. Something I loved about Kate was how even when she’s fearing for her life she still worries  about things like the food shopping, buying her son a costume for school and uploading family photos to the cloud. It’s definitely what I could imagine myself doing in her situation. 

A riveting and unforgettable debut by an author who is one to watch, Room 706 is a must for your TBR.

MY REVIEW:

Every year, best friends Erica, Anna and Claudia reunite for their book club holiday. This year they are getting together near Christmas, and Erica has chosen the cosy Maple Sugar Inn in Vermont for their getaway. The Inn is run by Hattie, a widowed single mother who specialises in making her guests’ dreams come true. But between motherhood and running the inn, there is little time to do anything than simply try to survive the festive season. The friends arrive at the Inn, and over the course of the next week secrets are revealed and all of their stories will become entwined in unexpected ways…

I love a cosy Christmas story, so when the SquadPod voted for The Christmas Book Club as our December Book Club pick I was thrilled. I’ve heard so many good things about Sarah Morgan’s books and have many of them on my TBR, so this was the ideal excuse to finally read one of them. And now I’m wondering why I waited so long. A delightful and uplifting story of love, friendship, family, grief and the changes that life throws our way, The Christmas Book Club is festive perfection. Sarah Morgan knows how to keep her readers turning the pages, delivering a story that is funny and entertaining but also has moving and emotional stories woven into every facet. 

One of the highlights of this book for me were the compelling characters and the depictions of family, love and friendship between them. I especially loved Hattie, the Inn’s proprietor, and her young daughter Delphi, but each of the characters had me enthralled and I was rooting for each of them. The will they/won’t they romance between Hattie and Noah was also gripping and I was cheering them on throughout. 

So if you’re looking for a warming festive story to read whilst snuggled under a blanket with a hot chocolate this year, this is the book for you.

MY REVIEW:

When torrential rain causes a landslide on a Scottish motorway it uncovers human remains that are soon identified as belonging to journalist Sam Nimmo, who disappeared eleven years earlier after the murder of his pregnant fiancée. He was the prime suspect, but now Karen Pirie and her Historic Cases Unit must discover how and why he was buried beneath the tarmac. 

Meanwhile, the team are reopening the investigation into the accidental death of hotel manager Tom Jamieson after his brother comes in with new evidence that seems to point to foul play. Soon, the evidence leads them to the elite book club Tom had joined shortly before his death. What are they hiding and just how far will they go to keep their secrets?

The SquadPod’s Book Club pick for October was the eighth instalment in the Karen Pirie series. Intriguing, mysterious and suspenseful, this enthralling thriller had me glued to its pages. Val McDermid is a crime fiction powerhouse so I jumped at the chance to read this book, even though it had been a while since I’d read this series. But I never felt lost or confused as McDermid succinctly catches the reader up with past events and the lives of Karen and her team. I was quickly immersed in this twisted web of power, corruption, secrets, lies, deceit and murder.

Expertly written, shrewdly choreographed, perfectly paced and full of heart and humour, McDermid’s crime-writing credentials are evident on every page. The book is filled with a cast of compelling characters that I loved reading. I loved the camaraderie and banter of Karen and her team, and how deftly they solve these old crimes. I liked that McDermid includes just the right amount of their personal lives to help us develop a connection with them that will keep you coming back for another instalment. The background characters are also fascinating to read and there were some unscrupulous characters that I couldn’t wait to see punished for their crimes. My heart raced and I was on the edge of my seat as Karen and her team untangled the intricate web to find the truth and finally get justice for these victims.

A must-read for anyone who enjoys a tense and twisty police procedural.

Los Angeles, 1965. Lane Warren moves from New York in order to work on her first novel.  As she tries to acclimatise to her new home, she begins to attend parties in the Hollywood Hills. It is there that she first meets Gala Margolis, a free spirit who seems to know everyone. The two are never best friends but they are drawn to one another and develop a friendship. As Gala’s literary star begins to rise, Lane is offered a book deal to write about their friendship. As the months go by, Lane feels deep guilt about writing the book, leading to a search for her friend that will uncover dark and shocking secrets…

Seductive, bold, mysterious and suspenseful, L. A. Women is a slow-burning story about friendship, rivalry, jealousy and betrayal. Set in L.A. during the 60s and 70s, Ella Berman brings the city and its Laurel Canyon music and art scene to life in vivid technicolour. It is these alcohol and drug-fuelled parties that serve as a backdrop for the story and the friendship between our two central characters, Lane and Gala. These women are fantastic characters. Richly drawn and compelling, they were fun to read, had me invested in their lives and pulled me into their glamorous but murky world. While both are ambitious writers trying to make a name for themselves in a male-dominated industry, that is where their similarities end. Lane is quieter, more reserved and barely drinks, while Gala is the bawdy, flirty and wild party girl. Their relationship is toxic from the start and I’d call them more frenemies than friends, having a years-long rivalry that leaves a trail of destruction in both their lives. 

Twist-filled, surprising, and full of the ups and downs life brings, this is a book that takes you through every emotion as Berman explores topics such as homophobia, reproductive rights, addiction, marriage, motherhood and fame. Gala’s disappearance also hangs over the story from the start, giving the whole book an air of mystery, foreboding and a ton of questions I needed to know the answers to. Central to the story is Lane’s book about Gala, which is intricately interwoven with not only Gala’s disappearance, but also Lane’s inner fears of failure. She is wracked with guilt and remorse and worried that by writing the book she’s using Gala just as so many others have done. Gala haunts her wherever she goes and nothing she writes is working. So, she decides to find her, but is unprepared for the life-changing revelations she will uncover. 

An atmospheric and thought-provoking read.

MY REVIEW:

“They said I would swing for the crime, and I did. Now I wear the rope-mark like a mourning necklace .”

Kate Foster once again proves fact is stranger than fiction with this astonishing and unforgettable novel. Based on the true story of Maggie Dickson, a Scottish woman who was charged with the murder of her baby and sentenced to hang for the crime. But that isn’t what makes her famous. Maggie is remembered because she survived her hanging. The Mourning Necklace is a fictionalised account of what happened, weaving fact with fiction to tell the story of her life and imagine how she escaped death. 

Maggie is a fascinating character. Strong, determined but naive, she has big dreams but actually knows very little about life and the world. When the story opens, all we know is that she miraculously survived her hanging, that she claims she didn’t murder her child, and that she’s hiding a secret. We then jump back a year and follow her as a series of unfortunate events lead up to her arrest. Despite not knowing what had happened that fateful night for a lot of the book, I liked Maggie and had a lot of empathy for her as she went through so many tragic events that highlighted how hard life was for a woman at that time. But was she guilty of murder? And how did she survive her hanging? I wasn’t sure and you will have to read the book to find out.

Kate Foster can do no wrong. I’ve read all three of her books and each one is sheer perfection. Just like her previous books, this story is exquisitely told, richly imagined and meticulously researched, transporting us to 18th Century Scotland. Ablaze with tension, we are kept on the edge of our seats for more than half the book, wondering if Maggie murdered her baby and how she survived hanging. But even when those questions are answered the tension doesn’t ease. More questions come to the forefront to keep us turning the pages, making this a book that is impossible to put down. And while Maggie’s conviction and escape from death grab our attention, there is so much more to her and her story that is compelling. In this book Foster explores themes such as reproductive and women’s rights, poverty, poor working conditions, patriarchy, motherhood, domestic abuse, grief and heartache, making it a story that feels as relevant today as it did hundreds of years ago. 

Outrageous, riveting and utterly magnificent, The Mourning Necklace had me enrapt from start to finish.  And that ending  😭😭😭

MY REVIEW:

TV reporter Rose is live on air for the most important interview of her career when she hears an unfamiliar voice in her ear, ‘Rose, I have your wife and son.’ Who is this mysterious person? Why have they taken her wife and son? And how can she get them back?

When a thriller starts with such nail-biting opening lines you know you’re in for a great ride. Tense, twisty, witty and addictive, Steph McGovern has crafted an unforgettable debut that every thriller fan should read. Expertly written, cleverly choreographed, intricately interwoven and pacy, this book thrums with suspense, drama, emotion, dread, and apprehension so sharp you could cut yourself. McGovern knows how to keep her reader on their toes, moving between timelines and narrators to keep us guessing and constantly building the tension up until the thrilling finale. And when you think it’s all over, along comes an epilogue that’s filled with even more shocking twists. 

McGovern’s experience in the world of TV reporting is evident throughout the story, making everything that is on the page feel authentic. I loved getting a glimpse into how everything works behind the scenes and stepping into an entirely new world. Another part of the authenticity is the characters. They come from all walks of life and each felt relatable, compelling and real. Rose is a brilliant protagonist who made me care about her from the start and I had a real soft spot for young Ollie. The politicians were suitably smarmy and gave me the ick every time they appeared on the page. 

As a proud northerner I was delighted to learn that this book was set in the North. I loved seeing this representation and appreciated that McGovern included familiar places, people and dialect.  I listened to this on Bookbeat and I loved that the narrator had the right accent, allowing me to completely immerse myself in the book and I flew through it in under a day.

An entertaining and unmissable debut, thriller fans should add this straight to their TBR.

MY REVIEW:

As soon as this stunning proof landed on my doorstep I couldn’t wait to read it. I mean, that cover just screams ‘read me’. Now, as Cat Fight is the SquadPod Book Club pick this month, it was finally time to dive in. And the claws are out in this suspenseful, twisty and humorous debut that follows the trials and tribulations of a suburban neighbourhood one summer. 

On a warm bank holiday evening, Emma, Twig, Coralie and their families are enjoying a get together in Coralie’s garden when the peace is shattered by a scream. Coralie’s husband, Adam, insists he saw a panther on the bonnet of his car. But no one else saw it. Rumours soon fly around their exclusive estate that there’s a panther stalking the neighbourhood. Further sightings are reported, turning the big cat mystery into a frenzy and tensions rise between the neighbours. But is the danger they face really coming from a big, wild cat? Or somewhere closer to home?

THIS is how you write a gripping summer read! It’s a story filled with drama, heartache, love, lust, grief, secrets, fights and (possibly) a big cat. Kit Conway’s writing and plotting is every bit as sharp as a panther’s claws, keeping me glued to the pages as I ferociously turned them. Drenched with the heat of summer and artfully foreshadowed, Conway dropped clues like breadcrumbs, keeping me guessing as I tried to predict what had really happened that crazy summer. But Conway shrewdly planted red herrings, making the book unpredictable, and almost all of my guesses were wrong. I didn’t see most of the twists coming and that jaw-dropping finale hit me like a bolt out of the blue. 

Emma, Twig and Coralie narrate the story, taking turns to share the events of that summer from their point of view. They are familiar but unlikeable and delightfully deranged characters, though my heart did go out to them at times, especially Twig. The women claim to be friends but frenemies would be more appropriate. And they were so much fun to read. The background characters were also richly drawn and I had a real soft spot for Twig’s son, Elwood.

A superb summer read that needs to be on everyone’s TBR.

It seems her only respite is to escape on a conveniently all-expenses-paid housesitting gig in Sri Lanka and keep a low profile until the drama passes, and the verdict on her case – and career as a surgeon – is decided.

Despite everything, she’s excited to visit the place she used to summer as a child. But what should be a restorative beach break is really a trip back into a murky, haunted past, which has been waiting for her all along.

MY REVIEW:

Talented surgeon Anika is overworked and overtired. It’s been a while since she last had a decent night’s sleep and the last thing she needs is an extra surgery when her night shift should be over. But there’s no one else and it is only a quick, routine procedure. But when her patient dies on the operating table, his prominent family accuses Anika of negligence. As the storm surrounding what happens grows and the hospital suspends her until an inquiry can be conducted.

Utterly devastated, Anika longs for an escape. So when an email lands in her inbox advertising a job caretaking a house in Sri Lanka, it seems she’s found the perfect solution. She’s excited to visit the place she was born and take a break. But she’s also nervous. Because Anika hasn’t returned since the night something terrible happened that she can’t fully remember sixteen years ago. Maybe this will finally give her the chance to finally lay her ghosts to rest. But soon, the holiday that she hoped would heal her turns into another nightmare she’s trying to escape…

Wow! What a rollercoaster this book was! Mysterious, tense and twisty, The Lying Guest certainly kept me on my toes. And that finale! Talk about heart-pounding. Anika is a compelling and likeable protagonist who was easy to root for. She has a rare condition called parasomnia, that can cause sleepwalking, sleep terrors and sleep paralysis and is made worse by things such as stress and sleep deprivation. Anika’s condition has been well managed since she took an experimental medication following the mysterious event that still haunts her. Because of this, Anika and the reader are never sure how reliable she is, adding to the tension and making me question everything. And while her housesitting gig should have been an easy job at a luxury house, she instead finds a dilapidated place with an unsettling atmosphere. Locals say the house is cursed and haunted, which Anika initially shrugs off but soon begins to question when unexplained things begin to happen. But could they be her parasomnia returning?

Eerie, gripping and layered, this is a must for any thriller lover.

But given Mimi has been blackmailed into attending Jane’s event, at a grand old mansion on Mackinac Island (Michigan’s answer to The Hamptons), there are worse drinks she could spend an evening sinking.

Thankfully for her, she’s roped her granddaughter, Addie – who is escaping the heartache caused by her manipulative ex-fiancé – into accompanying her. While Addie spots celebrities and socialites in the manor’s labyrinth of dark rooms and Mimi wonders how to confess the real reason for her presence at the soiree, a scream pierces the air.

Jane is dead.

And when a second body turns up, Mimi and Addie soon become the unlikeliest of sleuths in a race to narrow down the suspects.

In a house that contains as many secrets as the people within it, it’s going to take more than a Gibson to survive the night…

MY REVIEW:

Witty, whip-smart, glamorous and claustrophobic, This Is Not A Game is a dazzling locked-room whodunit. The story is set in a luxury mansion on Michigan’s Mackinac Island, where 77-year-old Mim has been blackmailed into attending a charity auction. She has taken her granddaughter Addie – who is trying to escape her own heartache – along for moral support. But everyone gets more than they bargained for when the host, Jane, is murdered. And Mim is the prime suspect. Then, as another person turns up dead, the mansion’s drawbridge door is stuck raised, and a storm prevents help from reaching them, Mim and Addie decide to try and find the killer. But as they search the house’s labyrinthine halls, all they seem to find is secrets. Can they unravel the clues and find the killer and clear Mim’s name?

This was a treat from beginning to end. Skillfully written, cunningly crafted, and steeped in the trademark twists and turns we expect from the genre, Kelly Mullen has created a sensational debut that feels both nostalgic and totally modern. Atmospheric and wonderfully descriptive, the story came alive around me and I felt totally immersed in its pages. It feels ideal for the big screen and that finale was one that Ms. Christie herself would have been proud of. 

In protagonists Mim and Addie, Mullen introduces us to a brilliant new crime-fighting duo that I absolutely adored. Mim is a sassy and sarcastic septuagenarian who loves a Gibson martini and crossword puzzle, while Addie is a feisty and savvy game creator who draws on her game plotting know-how to help her solve the murders. The background characters are the perfect mix of likeable and loathsome, helping to create a number of plausible suspects. As in any good locked-room mystery, the house is like a character in its own right, and this one is an eerie, claustrophobic and oppressive place with a maze of rooms. 

Suspenseful, slick, classy and funny, this compelling cosy crime is not to be missed. I’m hoping that this isn’t the last we’ve seen of these delightful amateur sleuths as I need more from this entertaining duo.
