MY REVIEW:

Emma Montgomery is trying to move on with life following the sudden death of her husband, Ben. Along with her friends Jo and Michelle she runs the Lonely Hearts Club, a group for singles wanting to make friends, and has agreed to organise the local pantomime to raise money for the air ambulance. But Emma gets a huge shock when at a meeting about the pantomime who should appear but Tom Sullivan, Emma’s first love who she hasn’t seen since they played Romeo and Juliet in their school play. To Emma’s dismay, he still makes her heart flutter just like he did when they were teenagers. But Tom broke her heart and she’s not looking for a man, so Emma is determined they will just be friends. But can she resist what her heart seems to want?

There is nothing better at this time of year than an uplifting romcom. And this book certainly fits that bill. Charming, warm, and witty, this was a joyful festive read and exactly what I didn’t know I needed. Kim Nash writes with heart and humour, expertly immersing you in the lives of her charismatic characters. And while there was laughter from the start, this is also a lot of depth to this story as Kim explores difficult topics such as coercive control, particularly the complex emotions that accompany it, and delivers an an evocative and moving portrait of grief and self discovery that reminds us all to believe in ourselves and take the opportunities life brings our way. 

But what’s most important in a romcom is the romance. You need characters who seem destined for each other and make you root for their happy-ever-after. This is something Kim delivers perfectly. I loved Emma and Tom. Not only were they great characters in their own right, but they had a compelling and tragic history and an undeniable chemistry that is still there over three decades later. These are people who make you believe in soulmates and I was rooting for them to find happiness again with one another despite the obstacles in their path. 

Life Begins at the Cornish Cottage is the perfect romcom to escape with this festive season. Highly recommended.

MY REVIEW:

Breathtaking, moving and unforgettable, Never Tear Us Apart is a truly special book that has stolen a piece of my heart forever.  A dual timeslip novel, it follows war correspondent Maia Borg, who we first meet in 2025 when she is visiting Malta, the place her estranged father, David, was born. It is her first time here but Maia soon finds that she feels like she’s coming home. But one day while visiting a temple, Maia faints and wakes in an unfamiliar place. This place is dark, noisy and airless. And she quickly realises she is in a shelter while bombs fall around them. It is 1942 and Malta is under siege from the Nazis and their allies. At first she thinks it’s a dream or that her PTSD is giving her hallucinations. But over time, as she takes multiple trips between timelines, Maia starts to believe that her presence in both places is real. But why? What has she been sent back for? As she makes friends and begins to fall in love, Maia realises she has finally found a place she truly belongs. But just as that happens, something threatens to take it all away…

Rowan Coleman is an author whose books are on my autoread list and I’ve always had a soft spot for her historical fiction stories most of all. So I couldn’t wait to read this book. I had high hopes but was unprepared for the beauty of this book and the emotional rollercoaster I was about to embark on. This book really should come with a warning! Exquisitely written, cleverly choreographed and filled with vivacious characters, you can feel how much of Rowan’s heart and soul has been poured into this story. She made Malta come alive on these pages, transporting me to a place that has been on my bucket list for decades. I felt like I was taking every step and feeling every emotion alongside Maia. As a fan of history and historical fiction, I appreciated Rowan’s meticulous research and loved all of the history in this story. It was fascinating and I love how she allowed us to learn alongside Maia and experience her joy at understanding more about this country and her heritage. It has definitely made me even more eager to pay a visit and see these places for myself.

This book has a bit of everything: history, romance, drama, mystery and sci-fi, all merged together in perfect harmony to create a story I never wanted to end. I also didn’t want to leave these wonderful characters behind. I was so invested in their lives and was rooting for Maia at every step. I was on the edge of my seat, especially as we got to the final third of the book and the stakes got even higher. The sense of apprehension, urgency, tension and foreboding was palpable, leaping from the pages and setting my nerves on edge. I couldn’t have put this book down even if my house had been on fire. 

A mesmerising story that demands to be read, I highly recommend this book.

MY REVIEW:

Seven strangers are stranded during a snowstorm and end up taking refuge on The Yorkshire Belle, a luxury steam train that had been prepped for the ultimate festive getaway. Unable to reach the nearest village – let alone their destinations – the group spend four days on board the train slowly forging bonds of friendship. But will any of them be the same people that stepped on board when the snow melts and they head back to reality?

A quintessential cosy Christmas read that hits all the right notes, this was a marvellous start to my festive reading. Like hot chocolate by the fire on a cold day, it warmed me from the inside out and gave me a warm glow. Told with Ms. Johnson’s signature warmth and wit, delightful characters and a hearty dash or peril, heartache and turmoil, it takes you on an emotional but uplifting journey. After all, this may be a Christmas tale, but it doesn’t mean that  life comes up wrapped neatly in a bow. Life is dark, messy, chaotic, emotional and full of jagged edges and Milly balances these things with humour, warmth, love, hope and friendship.

The ‘trapped in a snowstorm’ trope has been done time and again, but this felt like an original take on a familiar trope that happens to also be one of my favourites. And it’s a stroke of genius. I loved this setting. It’s claustrophobic, precarious and turbulent, but also opulent, cosy, jovial and full of camaraderie. There is also a sense of nostalgia as their phones don’t work and they are cut off from the outside world apart from one radio station that keeps them updated on the storm.

One of the things I love most about Milly’s books is the characters she creates. They are always so relatable, real and recognisable, feeling like she’s plucked your neighbour from their house or someone from the street and put them in a book. These seven characters were some of my favourites she’s created. I loved that they were strangers when they first got on the train – with the exception of married couple Frank and Grace – that they forge strong bonds of friendship over the course of their claustrophobic few days together that last beyond their Christmas on The Yorkshire Belle. I loved this eclectic septet, especially Jane and Elizabeth. And I had a lot  of empathy for Frank and Grace, especially as we learned more about them.

A heartfelt and uplifting story that gave me all the festive feels, I highly recommend this book.

Clemmie Bennett has spent the last year and a half in solitude while renovating Rowan Cottage. It’s been the best way she could think of to help her work through her grief after the death of her husband, Callum, in a tragic accident. But now Clemmie is ready to rejoin the world and decides it is time to explore her new town. But then, a chance encounter with Lizzie, the co-owner of The Cherry Tree Cafe, sees Clemmie agreeing to organise the first Wynbridge Autumn Festival, with help from local vet, Ash. And as their friendship starts to feel like more, Clemmie has to ask herself if she is ready to fall in love again…

Heidi Swain can always be relied upon to deliver heartwarming and uplifting romance that warms you from the inside like porridge on a cold day. And with her latest book, All Wrapped Up, she delivers all that and more. This is autumn in book form. Heidi has crafted the perfect autumnal romcom to read while snuggled up under a blanket drinking a pumpkin spice latte. 

This story is friend-to-lovers perfection and I was here for it at every step. Clemmie and Ash were both likeable and charming characters that were fun to read. Clemmie is also trying to navigate a devastating loss and I was cheering her on as she began living life again. I loved Ash and Clemmie’s friendship, though I was rooting for them to be a couple. It was obvious that they were made for each other. I’m a sucker for a dog sidekick and loved Pixie, the adorable pooch that Clemmie adopted, and loved seeing them help to heal one another’s grief. I also enjoyed seeing the familiar characters from Heidi’s other Wynbridge books make an appearance, but appreciated that this book could also be read as a standalone.

Delightful, warm and full of heart, this was a joy to read from start to finish. All Wrapped Up is the perfect book for your TBR this autumn. Read it now.

MY REVIEW:

Since the night of Chloe’s sweet sixteenth, she and Mel have been bonded by a secret. For two years that secret, and their blossoming romance, kept them close, only for Chloe to disappear just as their life together was about to start. Mel has been searching for her ever since. So, when the now-PI is hired by Chloe’s family to track her down, she can’t resist the chance and finally finds her living off-grid in a place riddled with booby traps. Clearly Chloe was expecting someone other than her former girlfriend to come looking for her. Who is Chloe so scared of? Could someone know what happened that night in the woods?

Action-packed, sinister and suspenseful, No Body No Crime is an addictive cat-and-mouse survival thriller full of star-crossed lovers, secrets, murder and betrayal. It packs a punch from the first page, opening with the aftermath of a plane crash and someone’s attempts to apprehend Mel and Chloe. And there isn’t just one mystery for us to unravel in this book. There are many. What exactly happened that night in the woods? Why did Chloe disappear? Who is after her? And why did the plane crash? 

This was my first time reading a book by Tess Sharpe, but it won’t be my last. Expertly written, skillfully plotted and full of complex and vivid characters, this is one of those books you can’t stop thinking about even when you’re not reading. It’s fast-paced, astute, chaotic, imbued with heart-stopping twists and shocking revelations, and has an irresistible love story woven in that I couldn’t help but root for. The story moves between timelines and narrators, keeping the reader guessing and on the edge of their seats. And Sharpe creates a strong sense of tension and foreboding throughout which she heightens by counting down to the significant events in each timeline. But when the full picture is finally revealed it isn’t over as Sharpe creates yet more mysteries that keep us glued to the pages. And that finale! Absolutely crazy but so good. 

A moreish, entertaining and twist-laiden mystery that gives me Yellowjackets vibes, this is a must for your TBR.

MY REVIEW:

Brave, powerful, visceral, and outrageous, this book is a masterpiece. Intertwining gothic fiction, historical fiction, romance and bawdy romp, this book broke me into pieces and then put me back together.  And that finale! I was lost for words, left feeling wrung-out, devastated, and uplifted all the same time. 

The Betrayal of Thomas True transports us to Georgian London, exploring the scandalous underbelly of the molly houses. Thomas True has arrived in London in search of a new life. But he’s harbouring a dangerous secret. A secret that leads him to be drawn into this bizarre underworld and its vibrant characters. The men who frequent them are forced to live double lives for fear of recrimination and risk everything to live as their true selves for a few short hours. But there is a rat amongst them who is betraying their secrets to a pair of cruel Justices. As Thomas and Gabriel, the molly’s guard, try to resist their forbidden love, can they unmask the rat before more lives are lost?

A. J. West is a master storyteller. This was my first time reading one of his books and he has immediately secured a spot on my auto-buy list. Expertly choreographed and sublimely written, West weaves gossamer layers of compelling storylines and a chorus of detailed characters together to create a world that leaps from the pages. It was so vivid that I could see the cobbled streets, smell the squalid air, and hear the raucous laughter of the mollies. West’s meticulous research was evident in the plethora of historic details but these never intruded on his storytelling, creating a story that was  both entertaining and educational as West shined a light on those who were forced to hide in the shadows. It felt welcoming, lively and enthralling from the opening pages and I felt like I’d stepped back in time as I lived every moment alongside the characters. This book captured my heart and soul, taking me through a rainbow of emotions. And that finale! I was lost for words, left feeling wrung-out, devastated, and uplifted all st the same time. 

Mr. West has filled this book with a motley crew of sassy, colourful, and captivating characters. The eponymous Thomas True is a fascinating, complicated protagonist who is on a journey of self-discovery. But does the title refer to him being betrayed, or is he the betrayer? I liked that we didn’t know, adding to the tension as I tried to decide if the things he was saying were true or a clever ruse to cover his tracks. Thomas finds what seems to be an authentic friendship with Gabe, a stoic, burly, bear of a man who is an absolute sweetheart underneath. His backstory broke my heart – I’m tearing up just thinking about it – and I liked him right away. He was easy to root for, I loved his friendship with Thomas, and I got really invested in their blossoming romance, even if I was worried about them being discovered. Gabe was probably my favourite character but I also had a real soft spot for Frump, the Queen of innuendo and a total riot who made me laugh out loud many times. I could happily read a whole book with him at the centre (possible future book idea, A.J.?). 

One of the things I think West does particularly well is portraying how treacherous life was for the mollies. Secrecy and a double life are a matter of life and death for these men, and the rat in their midst makes their lives even more hazardous. This brings me to Justices Grimp and Myre, an odious, vile and murderous pair who travelled the country in search of mollies to ‘bring to justice’, and the rat was giving them names. These evil men used religion and the pursuit of law and justice to sanction cruelty and persecution of others and I wished I could wipe the crooked smiles from their faces. Then there is the rat. I loved that West wrote this book so skillfully that it was hard to land on a suspect. Almost every single character had the potential to be the rat and I went back and forth through a number of suspects. This escalated the tension and kept me guessing, my heart racing as I tried to figure it out. 

Poignant, bold, mesmerising, and spectacular, The Betrayal of Thomas True is storytelling at its finest. Unmissable and unforgettable, this phenomenal tale is a must-read that I can’t recommend highly enough.

MY REVIEW:

Polly Fitzgerald is dying. So her daughter, Lucie, travels home to be by her side. But as she sits by her mother’s deathbed, Lucie is unprepared for the final story that she will tell her. Transporting us to Cairo on the brink of World War 2, Polly tells Lucie the story of her childhood best friend, Juno, and what happened in Cairo in the 30s. It is a story of the unbreakable bonds of friendship, of forbidden love, long-held secrets, and unspeakable tragedy. 

I’ve always been fascinated by Ancient Egypt so I knew that a story about Archaeologists, priceless artifacts and the search for Nefertiti’s tomb would be one that captivated my attention. Beautiful, immersive, fascinating and transportive, I was pulled in from the opening pages. Exquisitely written, skillfully interwoven and full of evocative imagery, Kate Lord Brown had me in her thrall from beginning to end. She expertly kept me in the palm of her hand by rationing the reveals as she moves between timelines and narrators. I was on a knife-edge of suspense and couldn’t stop reading. 

At the centre of this story are three compelling women who were a joy to read. They and the other characters were richly drawn, making you care about them and I quickly felt invested in their lives. I was even rooting for the forbidden romance between two of the characters. But there were so many questions I needed the answer to, and I was powerless, unable to stop listening until all was revealed. But when they were I was unprepared for just how much they would break me. 

So, if you’re looking for a summer read full of exotic escapism, this is the book for you.

MY REVIEW:

Cynthie Taylor’s star has been on the rise ever since her first acting role starting in a small British movie thirteen years ago. She has fond memories of that shoot with one exception: her arrogant co-star Jack. Their chemistry sizzled on screen and they successfully had a fake romance, but behind the scenes it was war and they vowed to never see eachother again. But recently the film became a cult classic and the director wants to make a sequel and for them to rekindle their fake romance. All while a documentary crew follows their every move. Cynthie needs this role. Can she put on her greatest performance yet? And can she resist the feelings that surface once she and Jack come face to face?

Happy Publication Day to this funny and engaging romcom. Enemies-to-lovers is my favourite romance trope and I’d heard great things about Laura Wood’s writing, so I was excited to start this one. I was not disappointed. Cynthie and Jack’s hatred for each other radiates from the pages, but there’s also an undercurrent of sexual chemistry that adds an extra layer of tension. 

Told in dual timelines, the story moves between the present and thirteen years earlier. The timelines centre around a movie shoot so there is a lot of detail about the behind-the-scenes operations and inner workings of the film industry, all of which felt authentic and well researched. The story is skillfully written, with many heartwarming and laugh-out-loud moments alongside the deeper themes explored such as abuse in relationships, #MeToo, and the treatment of women in the film industry.

The story is told by Cynthie and Jack. I enjoyed both perspectives but found Cynthie much more likeable from the start while Jack was spoiled and irritating. They both go on a journey of self-discovery and I enjoyed watching Jack grow as a person and Cynthie grow in confidence. I was rooting for them as people and for them to finally give into their feelings and become a couple. I wanted that happy ending!

Witty and compelling, this romcom is a must for the TBR of all romance fans.

MY REVIEW:

A romcom about a book nerd who has a meet-cute through anonymous letters inside a library book? Could there be a more perfect book for a bibliophile to read? I don’t think so, and I didn’t hesitate to sign up to be part of this blog tour.

Funny, delightful and uplifting, reading this was like a warm hug. A love letter to books, Lucy Vine’s love of literature is evident on every page and made me feel so seen as a bibliophile. Exquisitely written and cleverly plotted, I was in love from the first page and immediately knew that this would be a book I devoured. And I was right, reading it in practically one sitting and staying up until the early hours to finish it as I HAD to know if Jemma got her happy-ever-after with her mystery man.

The story is narrated by Jemma and Clara, twin sisters who couldn’t be more different. Jemma is a book lover who prefers to fade into the background and is happiest at home re-reading her favourite book. Meanwhile, Clara is outgoing, the life of the party who is happiest when all eyes are on her. The sisters have long had a strained relationship and it is strained even further when Clara announces she’s moving back to the UK from the States, as with nowhere else to go she moves into Jemma’s houseshare and the sisters have to adjust to living together again.

At the centre of this book is another book, Too Good to Be True, Jemma’s favourite book which is like a character in its own right. Jemma loves the book so much that she owns multiple copies that are only to admire on her shelves, and she takes a copy out from the library to regularly re-read. It’s obvious from the start how important this story is to Jemma, and you can feel how much she cherishes it and the joy it brings her. A few months ago, Jemma discovered a note inside the book from the only other person who takes out the book and they have been exchanging anonymous notes ever since, sharing their love of books. Talk about the perfect meet-cute for a book lover! But when Jemma learns that not only has the book been adapted, but its title has been changed, she is horrified. She can’t watch, especially as the lead actor is nothing like she imagined. Clara disagrees and not only loves the show – declaring that TV is better than books! – and developing an unhealthy crush on the actor; declaring he’s the one for her and tracking him down to engineer him falling in love with her.

There’s a cast of compelling background characters that I loved reading, especially Harry and Salma, Jemma’s housemates. And Milo was the perfect leading man, even if Jemma disagreed. He was fun to read and I loved the very different reactions Jemma and Clara had to him and his celebrity status. Then there’s the mystery narrator, a brilliant character who opens each of the book’s three parts. He talks directly to the reader which pulled me in and immediately made me feel part of the story.

But who was Jemma’s ‘book boyfriend’? There’s a number of potential candidates and Vine does a great job of keeping the reader guessing about his identity. I’ll admit, I did guess who he was early on, but I was also never completely sure of my suspicions thanks to the twists and red herrings. I loved the bumpy ride she took me on to finally get the answer and how even when his identity was revealed the wait wasn’t over, Vine keeping me on the edge of my seat as I waited to see if he and Jemma would actually get together. My poor heart!

An absolute joy from start to finish, this is a must-read for all book lovers.

MY REVIEW:

London, 1968. Felicity has moved from Provence to London to live with her estranged mother for a year before she goes to Paris to study art. While here she plans to improve her English, take a secretarial course and meet a suitable man. She’s feeling homesick but things start to look up when she meets Violet, who has recently moved from the countryside, works in a bookshop and is living in her godmother’s flat, which happens to be in the old servants quarters of the house that Felicity’s mother rents.  The pair quickly become friends and help each other as they adjust to life in the city. And when Felicity meets Oliver, a man like no-one she’s ever met before who lives on a barge, works a number of jobs and enjoys mudlarking as his hobby, Violet is there for her to talk to. But is Oliver the suitable man that Felicity is searching for?

Katie Fforde can always be relied upon to deliver a heartwarming and uplifting romance and her latest novel, From London with Love, has all of that and more. Charming, witty, romantic and nostalgic, this is a story about family, friendship and falling in love that will take you back to when you were young and finally discovering the world for yourself. 

Well-written and enthralling, it is filled with compelling characters who I loved reading. Felicity and Violet were fantastic central characters and I adored their friendship.  Fforde also explored the complicated relationship that can exist in our families but also the great relationships, such as the sweet relationship that Felicity shared with her stepmother which proves not all of them are wicked. The romantic interests were superb and Fforde perfectly captured the pain, uncertainty and misunderstandings that can come with the joy of falling in love, which is made all the more complicated by the class element that surrounds these characters. But my favourite character was Mrs. Wynter, who was delightful comic relief and I loved reading. 

A gorgeous escapist romcom that will make you smile, add this to your TBR now.

I’ve been a porter in an auction house, tried my hand at pottery, refurbished furniture, delved behind the scenes of a dating website, and I’ve even been on a Ray Mears survival course.

I love being a writer; to me there isn’t a more satisfying and pleasing thing to do. I particularly enjoy writing love stories. I believe falling in love is the best thing in the world, and I want all my characters to experience it, and my readers to share their stories.
