MY REVIEW:

Every year, best friends Erica, Anna and Claudia reunite for their book club holiday. This year they are getting together near Christmas, and Erica has chosen the cosy Maple Sugar Inn in Vermont for their getaway. The Inn is run by Hattie, a widowed single mother who specialises in making her guests’ dreams come true. But between motherhood and running the inn, there is little time to do anything than simply try to survive the festive season. The friends arrive at the Inn, and over the course of the next week secrets are revealed and all of their stories will become entwined in unexpected ways…

I love a cosy Christmas story, so when the SquadPod voted for The Christmas Book Club as our December Book Club pick I was thrilled. I’ve heard so many good things about Sarah Morgan’s books and have many of them on my TBR, so this was the ideal excuse to finally read one of them. And now I’m wondering why I waited so long. A delightful and uplifting story of love, friendship, family, grief and the changes that life throws our way, The Christmas Book Club is festive perfection. Sarah Morgan knows how to keep her readers turning the pages, delivering a story that is funny and entertaining but also has moving and emotional stories woven into every facet. 

One of the highlights of this book for me were the compelling characters and the depictions of family, love and friendship between them. I especially loved Hattie, the Inn’s proprietor, and her young daughter Delphi, but each of the characters had me enthralled and I was rooting for each of them. The will they/won’t they romance between Hattie and Noah was also gripping and I was cheering them on throughout. 

So if you’re looking for a warming festive story to read whilst snuggled under a blanket with a hot chocolate this year, this is the book for you.

MY REVIEW:

Gripping, intense, suspenseful and surprising, Geneva is a high octane thrill ride where no-one is what they seem and you don’t know who to trust. 

The story follows Sarah Collier, a nobel-prize winning scientist and her husband, Daniel, who is also a neuroscientist. Sarah has been invited to be the guest of honour at a prestigious biotech conference but she’s reluctant to accept as she has recently been showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease, the same illness that affected her father. But Daniel persuades her to go, reminding her that the technology being unveiled at the conference could revolutionise medicine and maybe even save her life. So, the couple head to snowy Geneva and are treated to five-star luxury. But while they are there Sarah’s symptoms worsen, events spiral out of control, and a controversial blogger is covering the story, leaving Sarah unsure if she can trust even herself. 

Fast-paced, heart-poundingly tense, and cleverly choreographed, with this sensational debut, Richard Armitage showcases himself as a thriller writer to watch. He drew me into the story from the start, balancing the tension and heavy science with lighter moments perfectly and keeping you on your toes with an electrifying game of cat and mouse and twists I never saw coming. Armitage’s evocative imagery and attention to detail really set the scene, and combined with narration by the author himself, brings the story to life so vividly it feels like you’re there. 

An exhilarating and unpredictable thriller not to be missed, I can’t wait for the TV adaptation and whatever Armitage writes next.

MY REVIEW:

We’re back with Henri and the others at the YouMeFun Adventure Park for the last book in the Rabbit Factor Trilogy. In his final adventure, the actuary and adventure-park entrepreneur is trying to balance his new family commitments with saving his park, preventing his staff becoming embroiled in an adventure-park war, and solving a murder. And time is running out. But Henri believes that order and mathematics will win the day as they always have, even if he’s forced further out of his comfort zone than ever as he faces his biggest challenges to date.

Laugh-out-loud funny, wacky, touching and unpredictable, The Beaver Theory is a glorious finale for this offbeat trilogy. In this instalment Henri is a real fish out of water as he embraces the chaos of family life, school runs and bake sales alongside the running of his adventure-park, a job that is far more dangerous than you’d imagine. Written with Antti Tuomainen’s signature kooky comic genius, warmth and tension, he kept me guessing as the madness unfolded right up to the spectacular finale. But this witty caper was also bittersweet as I never wanted the trilogy to end and I’m glad I’ve got the TV adaptation to look forward to. 

Henri remains one of my favourite characters ever written. Sensible, ordered, meticulous and very quirky, there is no one else like him. I adore this character and love the way he finds respite in logic, order and mathematics even when he’s a suspected murderer. He’s such a refreshing character to read and you can’t help but root for him every step of the way. I loved seeing him happy and taking on the challenge of family life and all its craziness in this book, especially when he’s pulled into being part of the ‘Dads Gang’. The latter paved the way for many hilarious moments and I enjoyed seeing his softer side in his interactions with Laura and her daughter. 

Kooky, original and entertaining, The Beaver Theory is another must-read from Tuomainen and Orenda. While it could be read as a standalone, I’d recommend reading the whole series to avoid missing out on some of the best fiction you’ll ever read.

MY REVIEW:

“The woman in me was pushed down for a long time.”

When I heard Britney Spears was releasing a memoir I wasn’t sure I’d read it. I wouldn’t call myself a huge fan, but I have always enjoyed her music and was interested in hearing her side of the story after she spent so many years silenced. This was definitely a case of ‘Bookstagram made me do it’ but I was glad I decided to listen to this at the end of last year. Powerful and heartrending, The Woman in Me left me with a new-found respect and admiration for Ms. Spears. The writing can be shaky, it’s obviously written by a ghost-writer, and it was sometimes hard to follow, but it was good to finally hear Britney’s side of her story. 

This was an emotional listen. There’s sadness, anger, frustration, heartbreak and joy, taking you on a rollercoaster of emotions as Britney recounts her personal and family history. We learn that the Spears family have been beset by tragedy and trauma for generations. Britney talks about how her alcoholic father, Jamie, continued the cycle of abuse and they all lived under a constant cloud of fear where nothing was ever good enough. At a young age Britney became a ‘little entertainer’, discovering that she came alive, was taken out of her bleak reality, and felt a sense of taking back control whenever she sang or performed on stage. But what felt like an escape for her soon became another tool for control and she was repeatedly let down and betrayed by her family; the very people she should have been able to rely upon most. Even the supposedly heartwarming memories she discusses are concerning and it is so hard to listen to as she’s mistreated again and again. I was enraged and incensed as I listened to the many awful things her family has put her through.

Obviously this wouldn’t be a memoir from one of the biggest female pop stars of her generation without discussing her fame and having achieved huge stardom when she was just a teenager, this is something that has been a massive part of her life. The way she has been treated by the media and paparazzi is vile. It made me so angry to hear how she was slut shamed and mocked, especially when compared to how men in the industry were treated so differently in the same situations. My rage was also inflamed as I listened to Britney’s side of her infamous breakdown and break-up with Justin Timberlake, revealing the media spin that was put on those situations so that she was portrayed as the problem, feeding into what her father wanted the world to see so he could keep control. 

Heart-rending, maddening, and illuminating, The Woman in Me is a candid memoir which serves as a stark warning of the negative side of fame and fortune.

MY REVIEW:

“Beauty is dangerous. Beauty has power. Beauty has violence.”

When Else finds Lux in the woods she has nothing. Everything she had was burned. The world is suspicious of women like Lux but she is cunning and knows how to blend into the background. Lux also knows a lot about poisons, which is perfect for Else because she needs her help to destroy the man who wronged her. But it will take them on a dangerous path where dark secrets are revealed…

It’s the first day of Booksta Review Week and I’m using it as an excuse to finally catch up on the many reviews I still have to write. Most of them are for books I listened to on audiobook, including Now She Is Witch, which I listened to back in October. 

Atmospheric, evocative and enthralling, this is a dark and witchy feminist fairytale about  power, love, loss, bravery, wisdom, and magic. It’s a timely story about disempowered women finally taking back what is theirs, utilising the magic that can be found in nature to do it. Kirsty Logan’s bewitching and poetic prose is transporting and stirring, telling truths that feel as real today as they did in history, helping the reader to connect with Lux and her story. I didn’t take many notes while listening, choosing instead to just enjoy the experience and what stays with me is the bawdy humour, compelling characters and riveting storytelling. 

Powerful, alluring, eerie, and unexpected, I highly recommend this book.

MY REVIEW:

On the First Day of Christmas is a sliding doors style story that is told in parallel timelines that diverge at a fateful moment. Liv Latimer is excitedly thinking about her cosy family Christmas celebrations back home in Ballycove and daydreaming about the proposal she is sure her long-term boyfriend, Eddie, will finally make this year when she’s caught up in a tragic accident. Faced with a choice, will Liv ignore her gut feelings and go home to Ballycove as planned, or will she stay in Dublin and see where destiny leads her?

My heart was not ready for this book. Heartwarming, funny, and filled with festive magic, I completely lost myself in this story. This was the second of the Squadpod’s two December Book Club Books and it is safe to say I’m full of the joys of Christmas reading. Beautifully told, cleverly plotted and filled with compelling characters, it is a fascinating exploration of how the choices we make can alter our lives forever but fate will always find a way. Faith Hogan expertly crafts the story parallel timelines, allowing us to see how the decision Liv makes at that fateful moment impacts not only her Christmas, but the rest of her life.  

The protagonist, Liv, is a wonderful and authentic character who is relatable, messy, vulnerable, kind, and stronger than she knows. The book opens with the tragic death of her twin sister, Rachel, from cancer and we see that she is still trying to come to terms with her loss, which is woven into the fabric of her existence and shaped her life ever since. I loved that Rachel was so present throughout the book and remained a guiding light for Liv from the beyond. It explores loss and grief in such a beautiful way that I related to and took comfort from on a personal level.

Another topic the story explores is the fear of being alone. Liv has been with her boyfriend, Eddie, for six years and is convinced that this Christmas he will finally ask her to marry him. Much of Liv’s inner turmoil and dilemmas revolve around their relationship. She knows Eddie is no prince charming but she’s also sure that being with him is better than being alone, something I think many of us can understand. But at the same time I was willing her to stop accepting less than she deserved and finally kick the deadbeat to the curb. 

A charming, witty and moving story filled with Christmas cheer, On the First Day of Christmas was a joy to read from beginning to end. I’m so thankful to the Squadpod for introducing me to new-to-me authors like Ms. Hogan and her backlist is now on my TBR.

MY REVIEW:

Three days before Christmas Libby and her new boyfriend, Max, reluctantly make their way to a reunion with Libby’s university friends. She hasn’t seen them since they left Durham University nine years ago and has made excuses for every annual reunion and meet up. She is wracked with nerves at seeing them again but reassures herself it’s only for a few hours. The snow is already falling when they arrive at the family estate of the group’s heartbreaker, Archie, just outside Thirsk in North Yorkshire. Despite her apprehension, the night is a success, but when Libby and Max go to leave they discover the snow has fallen much harder than anyone realised and they are snowed in. At first they try to make the best of things and enjoy their extended visit, but after the power goes out and they are stranded without any way of contacting help, tensions rise, old hostilities flare, and long-held secrets are slowly revealed, forcing Libby to confront things she’s been running from for almost decade. 

Christmas By Candlelight is one of the Squadpod Book Club books this month. Fun, uplifting, immersive and addictive, this is festive fiction at its finest. I started reading this in November and didn’t think I was quite ready to start my festive reading, but this was exactly what I didn’t know I needed and helped me get into the festive spirit. It warmed my heart, broke it, and then warmed it again as I lost myself in the story. The vivid descriptions of the snowy landscape and old estate adorned with decorations conjured up images of a scenic Christmas while also providing a feeling of claustrophobia that adds to the suspense and foreboding. Somehow, this was my first Karen Swan book. I’ve no idea how I’ve never read any of her books until now but this certainly won’t be my last. 

The story is narrated by Libby and told in dual timelines: the Christmas reunion in the present day and the group’s final term at Durham University in 2014. The friends are an eclectic cast of fascinating characters and there’s a feeling of nostalgia that comes from their reminiscing and the flashbacks to university. As the outlier of the group, Libby was a great choice for narrator and was likeable, flawed and relatable. It’s clear from the start that there are secrets, old conflicts, tension, and unresolved bad blood between the friends which boils over as they are forced to live in close quarters without heat or power after being stranded by the snow. Yes, there is some cheesiness and predictability to the story, including a will-they-won’t-they romance, but this is expertly merged with the more serious aspects of the story and all a part of the book’s charm. 

So if you’re looking for a charming Christmassy read that will warm you from the inside, I’d highly recommend this book.

MY REVIEW:

Laura Purcell has done it again. Gloriously sinister, gothic and eerie, Bone China is an unsettling tale from the queen of the gothic mystery. The Cornish coast and Morvoren House provide a haunting backdrop that is the perfect setting for Purcell’s unmistakable chilling and malevolent gothic style. You feel yourself in the grip of a master storyteller as she pulls you into the world she created with her meticulous and darkly poetic prose, compelling characters and strong sense of place. Filled with folklore, mystery, suspicion and foreboding, there’s a lingering atmosphere of unease and the sense of dread deepens as Purcell expertly blurs the lines between reality, imagination and the supernatural. All of this merged with the expressive narration of the audiobook to create a truly visceral and immersive experience. 

Told in three timelines we follow Hester Why in the present as she arrives at Morvoren House to take up a position as Lady’s Maid and Nurse to Miss Pinecroft, the strange and reclusive Lady of the house. A second timeline flashes back to Ms. Why’s past and slowly reveals her secrets. Lastly, we go back forty years before Hester’s arrival at Morvoren House to follow the story of Miss Louise Pinecroft and her father, Dr. Ernest Pinecroft. The Pinecrofts have come to Morvoren to continue his quest to perfect his radical cure for consumption. Purcell seamlessly weaves the many threads together, holding me in her thrall and keeping me guessing right up until the end. 

Purcell’s research is detailed, delving into Cornish folklore and the origins of bone china, which are surprisingly morbid. Integral to the story are the unsettling local tales of changelings and faeries, seen as a serious matter at the time. Faeries were dark and dangerous creatures with limitless power and were blamed for everything and anything: pregnancy loss, stillbirth, disability, famine, mental illness, and sickness, such as tuberculosis which is a central part of the storyline. Then known as consumption, tuberculosis is the illness that shattered the Prichard family which has led Dr. Ernest Prichard to Morvoren House so he can perfect his innovative cure with the assistance of his daughter, Louise. It was hard to read about the barbaric ‘cures’ people were subjected to in the name of so-called modern medicine at that time knowing it was based in historical fact. 

The characters are intriguing and well-written. Purcell allows us greater insight into who many of them are by having them appear in multiple timelines so we really get to know them and their backstories. While the characters appear very different, they are all deeply flawed people who are consumed by guilt and inner turmoil. Hester is a secretive, impulsive and obsessive young woman who oozes desperation. We know she’s fleeing from a tragic event and is plagued not only by regret but also fear of being discovered. I found her intriguing but was frustrated she refused to learn from her past mistakes and kept going in circles. Miss Pinecroft is a much more sympathetic character with a moving backstory. But it takes some time to unravel that and in the present we see her as a feeble and mute old woman who is confined to her bed or the parlour. Flashbacks tell us the fascinating story of an intelligent and determined young woman who is working hard to overcome the tragedies she has lived through and help others through working with her father on his cure for consumption. But the character who stood out most for me was Creeda, Miss Pinecroft’s servant who has been at Morvoren house for many years. Creeda is well versed in folklore and wholeheartedly believes the stories are true. In her world there are faeries waiting to steal people and changelings live amongst us. Needless to say, she’s a strange character. She is also shrouded in mystery and seems to be at the centre of everything that happens at Morvoren House, adding to the overall feeling of unease that surrounds her. I loved that the more we learned about her tragic past the more unnerving she became and her backstory was one of my favourite storylines.

Darkly atmospheric, insidious, menacing and utterly magnificent, Bone China is a DuMarier-esque gothic novel that is one of Laura Purcell’s best books yet. Highly recommended, especially on audiobook.

She began her career with two historical novels about the Hanoverian monarchs, Queen of Bedlam and Mistress of the Court before her break-out Gothic ghost story The Silent Companions.

MY REVIEW:

Starling House is the ‘haunted house’ that Eden’s residents avoid. Stories about curses, bad luck and even murder have been passed down for generations. Opal knows she should stay away from the foreboding, dilapidated mansion, but there’s something drawing her to it. And when she’s offered a job by Arthur, its strange and mysterious heir, the offer is too good to resist; a chance to finally save enough money to get her brother, Jasper, out of this small town and into a better life. But there’s a darkness to Arthur Starling and his house, something dangerous that makes Opal wonder if the stories might be true after all…

Unsettling, eerie and forbidding, Starling House is a gorgeous dark gothic fantasy filled with magic, monsters, secrets and suspicion. In her beautifully written and alluring reimagining of Beauty and the Beast Alix E.  Harrow has crafted a phantasmagoria of mystery, fantasy and horror that is impossible to resist. Much like the eponymous house, it pulls you in and transports you to another world, holding you under its spell until the last page. There are many things I loved about Ms. Harrow’s writing but I particularly enjoyed how she had Opal talk directly to the reader so you feel like you’re part of an intimate conversation rather than reading fiction. I also loved that she included footnotes throughout the book that made it seem like we’re reading an account of actual events and playing into making the story so believable. I had to keep reminding myself that all of this was fiction and the product of an author’s evocative imagination. 

“I should probably be freaked out—this place is eerie and endless, a rotting labyrinth—but mostly I just feel sorry for it. Starling House makes me think of an underfed pet or a broken doll, a thing unloved by the person who promised to love them best.”

The story is told by two narrators: Opal and Arthur. Opal is the underdog, a down-on-her-luck orphan caring for her younger brother who is scraping together every penny to survive. Spiky, fierce and spirited, you can’t help cheering her on, even as she does things you don’t approve of. After all, she’s simply trying to survive. Arthur, the heir and Warden of Starling House, takes more warming up to. Eccentric, cryptic and strange, he’s creepy at first but Harrow gives this reclusive character a beating heart, making the beast human and someone we feared into someone we care about. It’s an irresistible redemption tale that is perfectly executed. And while they may appear to be vastly different, they actually have a lot in common: they are both orphans who people of the town gossip about, look down on and are suspicious of, and they are both filled with a sense of duty: Opal to her brother, Jasper, and Arthur as Warden of Starling House. I loved watching their stories unfold and their relationship grow. By the end I was rooting for them both and hoping for a happy ending. 

“The House wants her, and the House is stubborn… He doesn’t know why it would want her of all people: A freckled scarecrow of a girl with crooked teeth and holes in the knees of her jeans, entirely unremarkable except for the steel in her eyes. And perhaps for the way she stood her ground against him. He is a ghost, a rumor, a story whispered after the children have gone to bed, and she was cold and hurt, all alone in the rising dark—and yet she hadn’t run from him until he told her to. The House has always had a taste for the brave ones.”

Starling House is more than a house. It’s a living, breathing entity and an important character in the book. When you step over its threshold you’re transported to another world. One that is dark, terrifying and secretive. Where there is magic, monsters and mythical creatures. But there’s so much more; the house seems to have a consciousness, feelings, a heartbeat. Its darkness is seductive and it pulls you in, just like it drew Opal to its gates. And while this world is filled with unbelievable things, Harrow makes it feel totally believable as she combines the perfect amount of the magical, supernatural and mythical with reality that makes us buy into its existence and lose ourselves inside it. 

“Small towns are supposed to be cozy and friendly, like perfect little snow globes, but me and Jasper have always been kept on the other side of the glass.”

The town of Eden is also very important to the story. This small town lives and breathes legend. Everyone and everything is cursed and the residents simply turn a blind eye. They also turn a blind eye to prejudice and suffering, topics that are explored throughout the book and we see examples of in both narrators’ lives. There is also an overwhelming feeling of claustrophobia that comes from this small-town setting and Starling House, adding to the tense and sinister air that hovers over every page.

Darkly atmospheric, haunting, dreamlike and bewitching, this mesmerising gothic fantasy is a must read.

MY REVIEW:

“You are invited to a murder.” 

Claustrophobic, unnerving,  and mysterious, The Twelve Days of Murder is a gripping whodunnit. There’s secrets, suspicion, suspense, and slaughter as a group of university friends reunite and resurrect their old murder-mystery group. It’s the first time The Murder Masquerade Society have been together since one of their members disappeared without a trace during a game twelve years ago. The games begin in a remote country house in Scotland, but their festive fun soon turns into a terrifying nightmare when the game becomes all-too real…

This twist-filled thriller had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. It’s a dynamic ripe for conflict: a group of old friends, full of mistrust, who are trapped together in a remote house during a snowstorm while a killer picks them off one by one. And the conflict is plain to see in every facet of this cunningly crafted thriller. Andreina Cordani drops clues like breadcrumbs for us to follow, making it feel like we’re playing the game alongside the characters as we try to identify the killer in their midst. I loved Cordani’s creative plotting, such as telling the story in five parts that are set out like the acts of a murder-mystery and the various ways she wove the Christams carol ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ into the plot. And the creeping sense of dread, of a predator hunting its prey, that lingers over every page made this one I couldn’t put down.

A dual timeline novel, the story is narrated by Charley in the present, while different Masqueraders take turns narrating the flashbacks to events twelve years earlier. While all the characters are richly drawn, compelling, flawed, and unreliable narrators, it was Charley I felt the sense of camaraderie with. I think this is because she’s the odd girl out of the group – the have-not among a group of those who have – and there’s a clear divide in how she is treated by them in both timelines which made me angry for her. But Charley and the group are sitting ducks. Prime targets for someone out for revenge. And Cordani doesn’t make it easy for us as we try to identify the killer, keeping us guessing with lots of misdirection and some surprising revelations that turn everything upside down and an unmasking of the culprit that left my jaw on the floor.

The Twelve Days of Murder is a chilling, sinister and suspenseful whodunnit perfect for those who like their festive reading with a side of murder.
