MY REVIEW:

A gunshot rings out at Damflask Reservoir on a cold winter morning. It leads to the discovery of a body that has a connection to the case Tyler’s father, Richard, was investigating before his death. Could this finally lead Tyler to the answers about his father’s death he’s been searching for all these years? As he digs deeper he must face those who will do anything to stop the truth from being revealed. But with all the clues seeming to say he’s on the right path, Tyler is determined nothing will stop him from finally learning what happened that day.

Gripping, tense and twisty, Russ Thomas has delivered another fantastic instalment in the DS Adam Tyler Series. Events pick up right after the cliffhanger at the end of book two, so I’d highly recommend you pick that one up first. This book felt more personal than ever with the search for Tyler’s godmother and mentor, DCI Diane Jordan, and a case that seems to be connected to Tyler’s father’s death. Since the start of this series there’s been a sense that his father’s death has overshadowed every facet of Tyler’s life so I was really rooting for him to find answers so he can finally move forward. But things obviously won’t be straight forward. Tyler is left not knowing who he can trust and there are some intense scenes as he tries to get to the truth. Meanwhile, the deeper he gets into the investigation, the more danger there is as those who know the truth try to stop it from coming to light. 

Fast-paced and intricately woven, the high-octane tension never drops for a moment, Thomas keeping you on the edge of your seat as he intricately weaves the threads together to a heart-pounding finale. A must for all thriller fans.

MY REVIEW:

Dark, tense and twisty, Cougar Point is another gripping instalment in the Detective Megan Carpenter series. The stakes are higher than ever as Megan and her partner, Ronnie, investigate a very personal crime. Ronnie’is mother, Victoria, has disappeared from the family’s exclusive resort in Cougar Point, Washington, and they are unofficially on the case. But who could have taken her? As the pieces of the puzzle emerge, family secrets are revealed and it seems to lead to more questions than answers. And could there be a link to an old murder that happened in the area? The race is on to find out before it’s too late…

Gregg Olsen never disappoints and the fifth instalment in this series is every bit as fast-paced, grisly, and nail-bitingly tense as the previous books. Olsen holds his reader captive as he tells his story, moving seamlessly between current events, flashbacks to another crime, and narration from the victim. At first it wasn’t obvious how the flashbacks would merge with current events, but he slowly sprinkles breadcrumbs that lead you to the surprising answers. And while I enjoyed all three threads, it was the narration by Victoria as she’s being held by the kidnappers that captivated me most, her fear palpable and making my heart race. 

The characters are compelling and I enjoyed learning more about Ronnie’s family and background in this instalment. I love her and Megan as a team as they really compliment one another and I enjoyed seeing how they worked outside of their usual community and while juggling tricky family dynamics. And, speaking of families, a key theme of the book is dysfunctional families, which are explored not only in Megan’s murky past but also Ronnie’s estranged family. Olsen also explores how secrets can damage lives and relationships as the truths about the Marsh family are revealed. It heightened the tension in the story and kept me on my toes as I wondered what would be revealed next.

Suspenseful, addictive and hard-hitting, Cougar Point is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a darker thriller.

MY REVIEW:

Skelf Summer has come to end so I’m sharing my review for the sixth and latest book in the series, Living is a Problem, which was released last week. As always, it starts with a bang, and this time there’s a drone attack on a funeral that has all the mourners running for cover. And there’s little time to catch your breath as the action keeps going with gangland vendettas, strange disturbances at a grave and a missing mum. 

The Skelf women are back for another witty, tense and twisty instalment in what has become one of my favourite series. What’s impressed me so much about reading these back-to-back is how the quality has remained consistently high with its nail-biting tension and dark wit. These books are complex, layered, chaotic, outrageous and entertaining, keeping me hooked from beginning to end then leaving me wanting more when it’s over. Doug Johnstone’s writing is always exquisite, deeply human and insightful, exploring some serious topics in ways that are relatable, moving and uplifting all at the same time. This time around he explores PTSD, panpsychism (the belief that all things have a mind or mind-like quality), refugees and the loss of a child alongside the usual family drama. Johnstone also examines environmental concerns as we see the Skelf women becoming natural undertakers and holding eco-friendly burials. I found these parts really interesting as I’d never thought about the economic impact of a funeral and it was interesting to hear about the more environmentally friendly ways we can bury or cremate our loved ones. 

But the best part of these books is the characters, particularly the Skelf women themselves. Compelling, full of depth and relatable, I love these women. They feel like old friends at this point and it’s been a joy to follow them on their highs and lows over the past six books. And I still have a soft spot for Dorothy, the matriarch of her family. If only I could be like her now, let alone in my eighth decade. I also love the community surrounding them who I have got to know really well at this point. I think building that connection and familiarity with the characters is my favourite part about reading a series. But what am I going to do now that I face the long wait for a new Skelf book? I will miss these characters so much. 

I can’t recommend this amazing series enough. While you could read this or the others as standalones, I would recommend reading from the beginning. You won’t regret it.

MY REVIEW:

A cold case that has never been solved. Teenage friendship and insecurities. A sun-soaked summer of memories and secrets. A missing girl. The Liars has all this and more, making it the perfect scorching summer thriller.

Still haunted by memories of the sun-soaked summer she met Lex, Zoe hasn’t returned to Eos for twenty-five years. That summer wasn’t just one of teenage fun, friendship and insecurities, it was also when a girl went missing and her two friends swore to keep a dark secret forever. But now, Zoe is back for her step-father’s funeral and finds that the ghosts of that summer never left the island. And they’ve been waiting for her to return…

Atmospheric, intense, unnerving and addictive, this escapist thriller is not to be missed. Told in dual timelines, Katherine Fleet has packed a lot into these pages: heartbreak, grief, friendship, insecurity, anxiety, envy, secrets, lies, romance, and self-discovery. Her writing is skillful and captivating,  a sense of uneasiness and foreboding woven through the story while darkness simmers beneath the surface. There is also a strong sense of place, Fleet transporting me to the island of Eos so evocatively that I  could feel the sun rays hitting my skin, hear the waves and smell the suncream. From the start we know that something bad happened twenty-five years ago. A secret that Zoe and Lex had vowed to always hide and was so terrible it tore them apart. Chills ran down my spine and I was on the edge of my seat as I tried to guess what had happened to Abigail. 

Zoe narrates the story in both timelines, offering the reader a glimpse into her psyche and showing us the other characters through her lens. This obviously makes it a biased account of events, but you get the sense that Zoe is a reliable narrator. Fleet’s characterisation is spot on, perfectly capturing the bittersweet teenage years with all their rebellion, angst, confusion and insecurity. She also perfectly captures the dynamics of teenage female friendships with all their drama, rivalry and jealousy. 

So if you’re looking for a suspenseful and intriguing read you can escape with this summer, The Liars is for you.

MY REVIEW:

Skelf Summer continues with the fourth instalment in the series, and its the tensest one yet with a fist fight by an open grave, an investigation into a possible faked death, a widow who claims his late wife’s ghost is physically harming him, Hannah is being stalked and Jenny is pushed to breaking point by a ghost from her past. 

Chaotic, taut, immersive, and darkly funny, Black Heart packs a punch. Doug Johnstone gets better with each book and this was my favourite of the series so far. This is domestic noir at its finest, but with a scientific slant. Johnstone’s expert writing is filled with humanity, insightfulness, suspense and black humour that feels magnetic, drawing us into the strange and crazy world of the Skelf women. And, this time around, life for Dorothy, Jenny and Hannah is more turbulent than ever. I love reading about these extraordinary women and their unorthodox careers and how their jobs get more dangerous and bizarre with each book, keeping me glued to the pages and on tenterhooks as I read. But one of my favourite things about this series is the depth and introspection that is woven into the stories, adding a more serious and emotional layer that I love.

Atmospheric, entertaining and outrageous, Black Hearts is a must-read for all thriller lovers. And while it can be read as a standalone, I’d highly recommend reading the whole series. After all, who doesn’t want to read gripping thrillers about three compelling and brave women running a funeral business while also working as PIs.

“What could have possibly gone wrong on an art course”

Original, ambitious, devilishly clever and addictive, the Queen of the epistolary novel is back with her twistiest and most perplexing whodunnit yet. 

The new art course at Royal Hastings University has been plagued with problems since day one. The six mature students on the course have clashed from the beginning, there’s rumours of an extra-marital affair, students setting fire to each other’s artwork, and a disastrous road trip. But they must somehow work together to create their final assignment: building an art installation for a local manufacturer. Surely they can overcome their differences and personal agendas to get the job done. After all, what could go wrong on an art course? The external examiner is convinced the answer is murder. He believes that one of the students was killed on the course and the others have covered it up. Surely he must be wrong? It’s time to examine the evidence and find out the truth…

A new Janice Hallet book always feels like an event so I was very excited to be invited on the blog tour and start reading. Expertly written, intricately plotted and acutely observed, this isn’t a book you read, but one you step into, inviting you to be part of it from the beginning by challenging the reader to solve the mystery alongside the examiner. The characters are richly drawn and fascinating, drawing you into the drama and conflict of the art course. I was completely immersed, living and breathing every moment alongside these characters and losing myself in the story so much that the world around me ceased to exist. I was ready to find a killer. Or so I thought…

Hallett is a master storyteller. When you pick up one of her books you know you are about to read an innovative, complex and sophisticated page-turner that will keep you guessing. She takes her readers on a labyrinthian journey that is impossible to predict, teasing us with misdirection and embedding clues into the story like breadcrumbs to follow. But they are hidden and we don’t see them until later when she hits us with a shocking twist, revealing the truth so that those little, innocuous things now suddenly have a greater meaning and things make sense. The puzzle begins to come together. I was in her thrall, on the edge of my seat from start to finish and so transfixed that I inhaled it in just two sittings. How on earth does she do it? I’d love to peek inside her brain and get a glimpse of her genius because I have no idea how she even begins creating something so clever and convoluted. I’m in awe. This is without a doubt my favourite of her books I’ve read so far and one of my top books this year. 

Creative, unique and immersive, The Examiner is an outstanding mystery that will make your head spin. Definitely one not to be missed.

MY REVIEW:

The Wrong Hands was one of our SquadPod featured books in July and I’m finally getting around to sharing my review. I dived straight into this one after book one as I was so hooked that I couldn’t wait to read more.

Detective Declan Miller is shocked when a young man turns up on his doorstep with a briefcase containing a pair of severed hands. Miller immediately recognises the case as proof of a contract killing commissioned by local gangster Wayne Cutler – the man he suspects could also be responsible for his wife’s death. The case gives Miller leverage. But unfortunately Culter isn’t the only one who wants to get hold of this case…

I’m starting to realise that Mark Billingham writes books that are bat-shit crazy but totally brilliant. This time there are gangsters, a murderer obsessed with Midsomer Murders, a psychotic welder, a woman who is driven over the edge by a wayward Creme Egg, and Miller is still trying to identify his wife’s killer. But it totally works.. The writing is fantastic with Billingham seamlessly merging very British humour with heartstopping tension while also exploring topics such as grief, loss and morality, bringing them all together to create a captivating thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. 

My love for Detective Miller has only been cemented with this book. He is just as unfiltered, sarcastic, cynical and dismissive of authority as he was before and still converses with his deceased wife, Alex, as a way to try and cope with his grief. It is through Miller that many of the difficult topics are explored, particularly grief, loss and acceptance. One particularly heartrending moment was Miller’s imagined goodbye to Alex, where Bingham explores the pain of the things we never got to say and how hard it can be to let those we love go. In terms of the other characters, I enjoyed how well Miller and his partner, Sara Xiu, worked together in this book. I also really enjoyed the greater insight into the criminal underworld this time around. We spend more time with the bad guys, getting a glimpse inside their minds, learning their motivations for a life of crime and how they rationalise their wrongdoings. We also saw the shades of grey that exist in all of us and how morality isn’t always a simple, black and white issue. 

Tense, twisty and addictive, devoured this one quickly. Now I have to impatiently wait for book three. Highly recommended.

Mark Billingham was born and brought up in Birmingham. Having worked for some years as an actor and more recently as a TV writer and stand-up comedian his first crime novel was published in 2001.

MY REVIEW:

In the third instalment of the outstanding Skelfs Series, they face their most challenging and unusual cases yet: a human foot is discovered in a park, a dying woman whose children are convinced she’s being poisoned by her lover, alien messages, a wild animal roaming Edinburgh’s parks, and the disappearance of the daughter of Jenny’s violent ex-husband. 

Suspenseful, twisting and completely addictive, The Great Silence is another outstanding return to Edinburgh and the Skefl women. I’ve never read a series back-to-back like this so I was a bit concerned about getting fatigued from reading the same characters, but I needn’t have worried because Doug Johnstone ups his game with each book, creating a novel that is even better than the last with each instalment. I can’t get enough of this series and my new concern is what I’m going to do when I’ve read book six and I’ve got a long wait for the next one!

One of my favourite things about this series is that it has a bit of everything: family drama with a twist of science, a dash of romance, lots of emotion, and an abundance of suspense. Johnstone also explores more serious issues such as prejudice, domestic abuse, alcoholism and climate control, seamlessly weaving them into the narrative alongside the heart-stopping tension and mystery. This time around the cases are a bit more unusual and bizarre, and the tension has been dialled all the way up to ten, keeping me glued to the pages and on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I also loved that now I’m three books in, I’ve got to know the Skelf women, so reading these books  is like catching up with old friends – albeit friends with very turbulent lives and unconventional jobs. 

Dark, witty, suspenseful and totally riveting, The Great Silence, and all of the Skelfs Series, are a must-read.

“Entering my villain era? Well I never really left it. Did I?”

I’d been in a real reading slump lately so I decided I needed a comfort read. So, obviously, I turned to my favourite serial killer, Rhiannon Lewis, and read the fourth instalment in the fabulous Sweetpea Series. 

Rhiannon Lewis has a new name and a new life in sunny San Diego. The pandemic has meant she’s had to keep a lower profile but she’s been happy to just enjoy life with her hunky fiance Raf and his family. She is finally surrounded by love and people who accept her. But it is bittersweet as they only know Ophelia, the new person she created after fleeing the UK. She longs to be accepted and loved as Rhiannon, despite her terrible past deeds. But she’s turned over a new leaf. It’s been over 800 days since her last kill and she’s finally found peace in her chaotic life. But that all comes crashing down when her sister-in-law has a run in with her abusive ex and Rhiannon’s taste for revenge is sparked once again…

C. J. Skuse has knocked it out of the park once again with this outrageous, fierce, scathing, and darkly funny thriller. Sweetpea became one of my favourite books of all time when I first read it back in 2019 and has become an auto-buy series and go-to thriller recommendation. So, I had high hopes for book four, which was everything I’d hoped for and more. Skuse’s writing is dark, witty, sharply observed and peppered with random cultural references that add to the comedy. I switched to the audiobook for this book and it was brilliantly narrated, taking everything up a notch and I devoured it whole.

Oh, how I love Rhiannon. And I guarantee you will too. Feisty, coarse, sarcastic and filled with pent-up rage, she’s a murderess with a beating heart and an ink-black sense of humour who does the things we’ve dreamed of in our darkest moments. But she’s a lot less murdery this time around as Skuse delves deeper into her history, untangling more of Rhiannon’s complex emotions, trauma and fears. This Rhiannon is more relatable than ever, longs for a normal life with her husband, and is trying to put away her murderous thoughts. She longs to be loved for who she really is but knows that revealing her true identity is dangerous and pretty much a sure-fire route to rejection. And prison. My heart broke for her as she wrestled with this dilemma but I was secretly rooting for her to give in to those urges and start teaching lessons that needed to be learned. And, of course, she still has that warped but laugh-out-loud funny inner monologue that I can’t resist. 

Twisted, macabre, hilarious and heartfelt, Thorn In My Side is another addictive instalment in an original series not to be missed. And that ending! I need book five now! Here’s hoping HQ grants my Netgalley wish. 

Rhiannon will be coming to your TV screens this autumn, so pick up the whole Sweetpea series now and read the book before watching the show. After all, I’m excited to watch Rhiannon come to life, but the book is always better.

MY REVIEW:

The Big Chill is the second book in Doug Johnstone’s sensational Skelfs Series, which follows Dorothy, Jenny and Hannah Skelf, three generations of one family who work together running the family’s two businesses: a funeral home and private investigation company. I decide to re-read this book, almost four years to the day after my first read, as I am reading the rest of the series for Skelf Summer – six weeks of reading the series in order leading up to the publication of book six in September. It jumps straight into the action, with a car chase interrupting a funeral that leaves the unidentified driver dead. The family matriarch, Dorothy, can’t let it go and is determined to find out who he was and lay him to rest. But this isn’t their only investigation, with others running simultaneously, as well as the funeral business always keeping them busy. 

Complex, layered and sizzling with drama, tension and ominous rumblings under the surface, The Big Chill is another outstanding return to Edinburgh with the Skelfs. While I recommend reading the first book in the series, this can be read as a standalone as Doug Johnstone quickly catches you up on the traumatic and life-changing events that occurred. In fact, this was the first book in the series I ever read and I never found myself confused about what I was reading.  I enjoyed this one even more the second time around, maybe because I listened to this on audiobook and the narrator does such a brilliant job of bringing the story and characters to life. Once again I was hooked from the opening pages and on tenterhooks as I tried to predict where this twisty tale would go next.

I loved the fascinating mix of three generations working together in dual roles that is an unusual pairing. It’s a brilliant basis for a series, so different from anything else I’ve read. The characters are well-written, compelling and full of depth. They are each trying to come to terms with the distressing and painful events of book one, and are still haunted and trying to make sense of it all. In the three women, the author shows how trauma and PTSD can affect people in different ways in a very real and relatable way that hit home with me a number of times. The background characters were also fully drawn with interesting storylines and back stories of their own. I’m very eager to read more about Archie and his unusual condition. 

Suspenseful, pacy and addictive, The Big Chill is perfect for anyone looking for a thriller that’s a little bit different.
