MY REVIEW:

“I left the bathroom and hovered at the top of the stairs. 
It was the pathway to Hell. The staircase was unit, but the bottom glowed like fire. Behind me stood the devil.”

Rachel wakes up in a strange room handcuffed to a double bed. How did she get here? And where is her husband, Jacob? She soon learns that the captor who took her from her home is Mikey James Bell, a super fan of  Emergency, the TV show on which Rachel plays Dr Elouise Sparks. He’s been planning and stalking her for a long time and has a very unusual/abnormal request. But Mikey isn’t the only person in the remote cottage with plans for Rachel that are even more sinister. But just like her No.1 fan, they have no intention of letting Rachel leave…

Unnerving, ominous, and claustrophobic, No.1 Fan is an addictive thriller that had me hooked from its opening pages. I was a big fan of Abby Davies’ debut – though not so much that I’d kidnap her – so I was thrilled to discover that this one was every bit as good. Inspired by the Stephen King classic Misery, there is an odious presence and sinister tension that hovers over every page and I was on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. The story gets increasingly psychotic and twisted as it goes on, making me feel like I was watching a horror film. I couldn’t stop reading and devoured it in just a few hours. 

“It was clear he had an evil spirit inside him, one that he fought to suppress every day. I couldn’t help fearing there would come a time when he fought and failed.”

The story is told from Rachel’s perspective and the sense of isolation, bewilderment, distress, and heart-pounding fear, is palpable. You can feel her desperation as she tries to find an escape and I could feel the adrenaline running as much through my own veins as it was hers. And seeing the other characters through her eyes doesn’t make them any less vivid or compelling. Her abductor, Mikey, is full of complexities and contradictions. While he starts out quite eerie it is soon apparent that he isn’t the real monster in this house. That title belongs to someone else. I won’t name them to avoid spoilers, but this person is a truly heinous and vile character. They know their actions are wicked and relish in it. All they care about is getting what they want and they are prepared to resort to the cruellest, darkest deeds to make it happen. It was chilling. And gave me so much sympathy for Mikey, though he obviously wasn’t entirely innocent. 

So if you’re looking for an eerie thriller to read this spooky season then look no further than this menacing and forbidding read.

MEET THE AUTHOR:

Abby Davies was born in Macclesfield in 1984. She grew up in Bedfordshire in a seventeenth century cottage near Flitton Moor and started writing ‘thrillers’ when she was seven years old.

After reading English Literature at Sheffield University and training to be an English teacher, she competed in national Modern Jive competitions (featuring on the podium several times), and wrote novels in her free time.

In 2012 she took a break from teaching and gained a Creative Writing MA from Nottingham Trent University. She has taught at both state and independent schools, including Jilly Cooper’s and Minnette Walter’s old school in Salisbury. She was shortlisted for the Mslexia Novel Competition in 2018 and longlisted for the Blue Pencil Agency First Novel Award in 2019. Her interest in the human mind inspired her to write Mother Loves Me which was published by HarperCollins in 2020.

She lives in Wiltshire with her husband, daughter and two cocker spaniels.

MY REVIEW:

Lauren stumbles out of the taxi after a great night out with friends celebrating her engagement. The only thing missing was her best friend, Sienna, but she had fun anyway. Life is great and she couldn’t be happier to finally be engaged to Robbie. As she enters her small house all is dark and quiet, so she undresses and crawls into bed next to her fiance. But something isn’t right. He feels cold. And why can she feel something wet? She turns on the light to see the body of her best friend covered in blood. Why is Sienna in her bed? And what has happened to Robbie? Lauren’s scream pierces the air and as she picks up her phone to call the police she hears a thud from another room. The killer is still in the house…

Her Hidden Shadow is another first-class thriller from Carla Kovach. It had everything I’ve come to expect from one of her books and she pulled me in with her compelling characters, intriguing plots, and heart-stopping suspense. I like how she always tackles a deeper topic in her books, this time exploring the effects of trauma with honesty, sensitivity and compassion. Her stories are always hard to predict and I was on tenterhooks as she built up to the big reveal. 

This is the fourteenth book in the Detective Gina Harte series and at this point Gina and her team feel like old friends. So despite the dark and difficult topics these books always feel like comfort reads to me. I’m emotionally attached to these characters, something Kovach uses to her advantage by adding in storylines featuring Gina and her team that threaten everything you think you know. It heightens the tension and makes it impossible to put the book down. And boy did she put me through it with this book, though I’ll not say more as I don’t want to ruin the surprise. 

Action-packed, tense, addictive, and full of twists and turns, Carla Kovach has knocked it out of the park once again. I can’t wait for book fifteen!

MY REVIEW:

“Can there be anything more frightening than realising that a bad dream was actually a memory, and then finding yourself back in it?”

Sisters Nina, Lizzie and Aisa Kelsey find themselves stranded during a storm and are forced to take shelter in Moirthwaite Manor, an isolated mansion where their mother once worked. The house is swathed in darkness and appears to have long since been abandoned, leaving them wondering what happened to its former residents. Unable to agree who should go for help, the sisters draw straws to decide, and one of them heads out into the cold, dark, terrifying night. But are those inside the house any safe? 

Darkly atmospheric, eerie, and forbidding, The Short Straw is a cocktail of nerve-shredding chills and adrenaline that you won’t be able to put down. There’s an unrelenting unease and a dark, oppressive feeling that permeates the pages from the start. I felt like I was watching the opening of a horror film as the sisters approached Moirthwaite Manor, which has an ominous and sinister presence. It’s the kind of place where you wouldn’t be surprised to see bloodstains on the surfaces or an empty chair creaking as it rocks back and forth. It feels claustrophobic, like you can feel the walls closing in on you. I wanted to scream at them not to go in and just run away from this terrifying place. But they couldn’t hear me. So I read on while frozen with fear, desperate to know what came next but also terrified of what might be waiting in that house. 

“The first thing they notice is the cold. Somehow, it feels colder inside than out. A frozen silence, years in the making, is embedded in every crevice. This place is a stranger to sunlight.”

The story is told in dual timelines, moving between the night the three sisters are sheltering from the storm and flashbacks told by their late mother, Rosemary, that slowly reveal the dark, monstrous history of the house. The characters are all richly drawn and compelling, with Kelsey’s being easy to root for while the background characters felt menacing and unreliable. This compounded the heart-pounding tension and made me feel an even greater rapport with the sisters. I also loved Seddon’s decision to have Rosemary narrate the flashbacks as it makes her feel real and allowed me to form a real connection to her. It also offered a different perspective on the sisters’ memories that was fascinating. 

A story about three sisters trapped together in a storm is a dynamic ripe for conflict and there is tension, acrimony and drama between them from the start. But the sisters aren’t only dealing with family conflict. Each of them is trying to come to terms with their grief after Rosemary’s recent death and the author explores the different ways grief can affect us while also exploring topics such as the complexities of mother-daughter relationships and abandonment. She seamlessly weaves these more emotional themes with the haunted house trope and sense of creeping fear to create a thriller that doesn’t just send shivers down your spine but also tugs on your heartstrings. 

Clever, chilling and surprising, The Short Straw is an outstanding thriller. And I loved every second of it. Just make sure you read it with ALL the lights on.

MY REVIEW:

The good daughter respects her father’s command.
The good daughter dresses modestly.
The good daughter must do as she’s told.
But sometimes daughters must be bad to survive. 

With a tagline like that, I had to read this book, and I was delighted when it was picked as the Squadpod Book Club book for August. We’d read Laure van Rensburg’s debut, Nobody But Us for our book club last year and I was a big fan, so I couldn’t wait to read this one. 

Newhaven, South Carolina. Home to the controversial New America Baptist Church and a refuge from the immoral modern world for its members. Abigail is proud to be one of them. The 17-year-old is committed to being a good daughter and spreading the church’s teachings to lost souls. One night a fire ravages her family home and Abigail is the sole survivor. It seems like a tragic accident, but as Abigail’s memories of that night and the weeks leading up to it fail to return, members of the congregation become increasingly suspicious. Did an outsider break in and start the fire? Or was this good daughter involved in her parent’s death?

“They all keep staring at me, waiting for me to talk, but I ain’t got no words for them. No answers to their questions. The fire’s left me with nothing but charred memories, no shapes. It burned all my feelings and left me numb with questions of my own.”

Laure van Rensburg has lived up to the hype of her debut with The Good Daughter. There’s no ‘sophomore syndrome’ in sight as she once again delivers a darkly atmospheric, suspenseful and unputdownable thriller that I quickly devoured. A story of dark secrets, fractured people, indoctrination and trauma, it captures the many shades of evil that can be hidden behind a guise of love. Well-written, shrewdly choreographed, and told with empathy and sensitivity, the intricately woven plot contains a complex maze of twists and turns that keeps you guessing. I was in van Rensburg’s thrall, on the edge of my seat as she slowly untangled the knots to reveal the shocking truth, leading to a jaw-dropping finale I’m still not over. 

Seamlessly moving between dual timelines, we follow the aftermath of the fire as Abigail desperately tries to remember what happened that night and in the weeks leading up to her parents’ death, but she is haunted by nightmares and distorted fragments of memory slowly return to her, ramping up the tension with each new revelation. Also included are audio files and other media that hint at something dark and sinister yet to come while also helping us slowly piece the story together. Van Rensburg’s evocative storytelling and richly drawn characters offer us a glimpse of life inside the cult that feels authentic. There are clear gender roles taken from their warped view of the bible and that we see in the coercive control, dominance and abusiveness of the men alongside the subjugation and compliance of the women. Abigail has been raised in this since she was a young child and sees nothing wrong with the rules she follows. She idolises her father, who, quite frankly, is an abusive asshole. I wanted to reach into the book and rescue her from the life she’s been brainwashed into accepting. But thankfully there was hope on the horizon. Summer comes into Abigail’s life when she agrees to secretly be interviewed for her podcast and the young woman becomes a catalyst for change as she opens her eyes to some of the lies she’s been told, creating an inner conflict and rage that leapt from the page. It is powerful stuff that really makes you feel for Abigail as her world is turned upside down and makes you wonder if she could have been involved in the fire after all…

“My head is full of screams, deafening echoes hitting the walls of a cave; they mingle with roars from the fire, but there’s something else underneath them, scratching to get out. 
But I can never see past that shattered mirror, the pieces only allowing me to catch a glimpse, a detail, never enough for a full picture, for anything to make much sense. 
Always a red fire. So much red. A red that burns.”

There’s a sinister cloud of mistrust that lingers over these pages, and never more so than when surrounding most of the cult’s members. Again, there is a clear divide between genders with the women seeming more mysterious and meek, while the men are controlling and violent. Abigail’s father is a real piece of work who made me so angry that I wanted to reach into the book and book and give him a taste of the abuse he dolled out. I was furious with her mother for not only standing idly by, but encouraging her daughter to accept the abuse as something she deserves. While it was obvious she had secrets that made her feel she owed him something, nothing excuses allowing your child to be abused and my heart broke for Abigail being so let down by both parents.

A first-rate thriller with Handmaid’s Tale vibes, The Good Daughter is a powerful, mesmerising and addictive read that would make a perfect series. READ IT NOW!

Laure Van Rensburg is a French writer living in the UK and an Ink Academy alumna. MY REVIEW:

Connie Hunter has been hiding a secret for forty years. One that she thought her husband, Ray, had taken to his grave. And can her family survive the fallout after all is revealed?

Wow! What a crazy rollercoaster ride! Gripping, atmospheric, mysterious, and sizzling with suspense, this book had me holding on for dear life through its many twists and turns. Samantha Hayes is an author I can always rely on to write heart-pounding psychological thrillers. And that ending! It left my jaw on the floor and I’m still trying to pick it up. 

It started out strong with a sinister and intriguing prologue before jumping back to a week earlier when the Hunter family are all coming together at their Scottish cabin for the first time since the death of patriarch, Ray. And with family drama, resentment, tension, suspicion, secrets, and lies all bubbling under the surface, it’s a question of when, not if, it all boils over. The story is told from multiple points of view, allowing us to really get inside the psyche of all the characters. This also ramped up the tension and allowed me to really get a feeling for who was a reliable narrator and who wasn’t. Although, as things became increasingly layered and complex I found myself not knowing who to trust, beginning to question everything I thought I knew and suspecting red herrings everywhere. I was on the edge of my seat and raced through the pages to get answers. 

Well-written, cleverly plotted, fast-paced, and addictive, The Inheritance is an outstanding thriller you need on your TBR.

MY REVIEW:

Henri and Louise are two strangers travelling alone on a train from Belgrade to Istanbul. Only this isn’t the first time they’ve met…

An elegant and alluring story filled with glamour, romance and intrigue, The Continental Affair is an action-packed historical mystery you won’t want to put down. This was my first time reading a book by Christine Magnan and I’m so mad at myself for sleeping on her books! Rich in sumptuous detail, filled with lyrical prose, and oozing with malice, I lost myself in this book. Magnan transported me back to 1960s Europe so vividly that I could feel the heat on my skin and smell the cigarettes. 

A chance rendezvous between two strangers in a foreign city leads to their fates being inextricably entwined. I was on the edge of my seat as we moved seamlessly between narrators and timelines, slowly revealing their stories and secrets. Henri and Louise are compelling and mysterious characters who appear at first to have little in common. But soon we see their similarities: they are both alone in the world, have tragic histories, are running from their pasts, and both just want to belong. Though they made some questionable decisions, they were likeable and I was completely invested in their stories. I enjoyed their game of cat and mouse and was rooting for them as I watched them get closer. 

Luscious, atmospheric, stylish and memorable, this twisty caper had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Highly recommended.

MY REVIEW:

Just after midnight Detective Eve Bennett receives a call from an unknown number. It is a distraught woman claiming her baby is missing and that there are many others who have also vanished. Eve rushes to the caller’s home only to find it empty and the neighbours unwilling to answer the door. No one is willing to talk in Hilldale. The town is home to a polygamist sect and secrets run rife, as does their distrust of outsiders. Eve and her team have to convince someone to talk if they are to find the baby or her mother. And what she eventually uncovers is worse than anything she imagined…

The second book in the Detective Eve Bennett series takes us back inside the twisted world of a fundamentalist cult and the battles Eve and her team face trying to help their innocent victims. But don’t worry if you’ve not read the first book, because Holly S. Roberts catches you up succinctly, making it possible to read this one while still feeling like you understand all the nuances of the story and character relationships. It is well written and gripping, taking you through a wide range of emotions and keeping you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end as she expertly weaves heartbreak, anger, frustration, laughter, disgust and strength into the narrative.

Eve Bennett is a fantastic protagonist, and I stand by my comments from my review of book one where I referred to her as ‘a new star in crime fiction.’ Feisty and tenacious; she is passionate about giving a voice to the voiceless and helping people escape the cult. It is personal for her, as she escaped the cult as a teen and is still coming to terms with the long-term trauma of being raised there. It was great to see her slowly allowing love into her life in this book and watching her continue to grow as a person. Her team is also made up of fascinating characters and I love their dynamic. It makes you believe in them and root for them to solve the case despite the many obstacles in their way. There are also some brilliantly written villains in the book who will make you rage and your stomach turn, Roberts expertly walking that fine line by making you feel those feelings while also helping you understand the indoctrination they’ve been subjected to and also never using it to excuse their actions, making it clear they should still be held accountable. We also see some incredibly brave characters who risk their lives either by helping Eve or reaching out for  help themselves. It is a reminder of just how dangerous these extremist views can be and the risk to those caught up in them. 

Gritty, chilling, twisty and tense, this heart-pounding thriller is a must read for fans of the genre. Now I just have to wait impatiently for book three.

MEET THE AUTHOR:

Holly Roberts began writing to alleviate stress in her day job, that of a homicide and sex crimes detective. Romance was her go to genre because she required a happy ending. She also touched on cozy mysteries and added six books to her forty book romance repertoire. Now that she’s retired and her mind at peace, she decided to delve into crime thrillers using her background and thirst for research to write the Eve Bennet series.

Holly has two movie/television options under her belt for her amazing life story. Part of the reason is Holly became a police officer at age 45 and led two high profile cases, one involving a serial killer. MY REVIEW:

Stanhope. A small town that is considered safe for families. But when nine-year-old Avery Wooler goes missing one afternoon, it suddenly doesn’t feel so safe. As the police investigate, witnesses come forward with shocking allegations, and the Wooler’s neighbours become increasingly unhinged. And there are some residents who are hiding secrets they don’t want revealed. Could one of them hold the clues to what happened to Avery?

Omg. Was this the rollercoaster ride! Compelling, chaotic, and surprising, this twist-filled suburban family drama sizzled with suspense from beginning to end. Once again, Shari Lapena delivers, and I was hooked as she expertly wove her intricate web of doubt around this neighbourhood, leaving me on the edge of my seat as I tried to decipher the clues and red herrings. I was unprepared as she revealed the truth; pulling the rug from under me in one swift, skilled move. It was impossible to put down and I devoured it quickly over the course of an afternoon. 

A multiple point of view thriller exploring the shocking fallout of an affair, the story is told by a cast of complex, flawed and conflicted characters, many of whom have something to hide. Having so many narrators did make the story feel a bit choppy at first, but I soon got used to it quickly moving between characters and I enjoyed the insight into what so many key players were thinking and feeling as the story unfolded. And what unfolded is every parent’s worst nightmare. The pain radiates from the pages as Erin and William Wooley wait for news of their daughter’s fate, but it was hard to have much sympathy for William, even when he was living in a hotel with his marriage in tatters, because of his actions and the uncertainty about his involvement in the crime. But my heart broke for Erin and Avery’s brother, Michael, as they waited for news. But it isn’t an easy case for the police to solve. Rumours and accusations are rife, and suspicion spreads like a disease, the ripple effect of William and Nora’s affair being felt by many in the neighbourhood. 

Atmospheric, intricate, unpredictable, and filled with adrenaline, Everyone Here Is Lying is a totally bingeable psychological thriller that has all the ingredients that made me fall in love with the genre. A must-read.

MY REVIEW:

“They don’t like a woman with a loud voice. You start shouting, bringing attention to them and it scares the shit out of them.”

Em is having one of those days where nothing is going right. She’s lost her job, lost her home, and a heatwave has brought London to a standstill forcing her to have to drag her suitcase across the city to try and make her plane back home for her sister’s wedding and to see her dying mother. But the heat isn’t the only dangerous thing about London’s streets; a serial killer is targeting women and making the streets feel unsafe. Tired of men getting their way at her and other women’s expense, Em refuses to let them win anymore. And her defiance will cause shockwaves…

Good Girls Die Last is a gripping and timely thriller about violence against women, female rage, female fear, and finding your voice. Natali Simmonds has created a book that is part entertaining thriller, part social commentary, and part call to arms. All women will recognise the fear and frustration on these pages. We’ve all had a man say, ‘Smile love, it might never happen’, or make lewd comments when we’re simply walking on the street. We all know that feeling of rage boiling inside while we are forced to plaster on a mask of normalcy and smile sweetly. And Em embodies us all when she decides to take her stand, even if she was unprepared for the ripple effect it caused. Fast-paced, laced with dark humour, and brilliantly written, I loved the mysteries that the author wove into the story that kept me on the edge of my seat. What is in Em’s past that she’s running from? And who is the serial killer stalking London’s streets? I needed answers and inhaled this book to get them. And that last sentence! I’m still reeling from that particular body blow. 

“It’s not the big things that send you over the edge. People think it is; not having a house, losing all your money, all that. But it’s not. It’s the little things that kill you. The stuff that sneaks up on you while you’re busy holding on tight to the big things.”

Em is all of us. A deeply flawed but real and relatable character who is fierce, feisty and furious. Still reeling from heartbreak, grappling with her 30th birthday looming, keeping who she really is a secret from her family, and harbouring a dark secret of her own, Em’s rage finally boils over. She’s tired of being walked over by misogynists who feel entitled to their own way at the expense of women, and tired of keeping quiet and sweet. But Em isn’t the only brilliant character in this book. I also really loved Rose, the spunky and memorable woman who Em meets on her pilgrimage to the airport and forms a quick but strong bond with. 

Fiery, enraging, unapologetic and brimming with tension, Good Girls Die Last is a thought-provoking feminist thriller every woman needs to read.

MY REVIEW:

Rona Halsall is the Queen of the twisty, morally complex domestic thriller. One of my go-to authors, I don’t even read the synopsis anymore as she never fails to deliver a taut and tense story filled with unexpected twists. Her latest novel, The Bigamist, is no different, keeping me on my toes from start to finish. 

The story is told in three parts by Emma. When it opens, she is eight months pregnant and excitedly anticipating the birth of her first child. But a call to her husband, Sam, turns her world upside down when another woman answers and she claims that SHE is actually his wife. But we soon learn that there is even more to this story; Sam isn’t the only one keeping secrets, and Emma also has something to hide… 

Addictive, emotionally-charged, and surprising, I couldn’t put this down and flew through it in just a few hours. Well written, cleverly plotted and immersive, it had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. And the twists. Wow. This was jam-packed with so many of them that I got book whiplash! Every time I thought I might know where the story was going, Halsall delivered another jaw-dropping twist that forced me to reevaluate everything I thought I knew. How does she do that?! And that ending…Omg! I’m still reeling. 

I’ve talked before about Halsall’s talent for writing morally complex characters that are easy to relate to, and Emma is a perfect example. As a reader we are put in her shoes, making us feel everything she does so we can empathise with what she’s going through. By giving us that connection to her I felt less judgemental when she made some of her desperate decisions and continued to root for her even after learning her secrets. And speaking of her secret – I did not see that coming! Even with the breadcrumbs Halsall sprinkled into the story it completely blindsided me. 

Emma and Sam’s whirlwind relationship is full of red flags and love bombing. Even without knowing he was a bigamist from the start, I would have been suspicious and wished I could tell Emma to run. Through their relationship, Halsall explores coercive control and reminds us how easy it is to get so caught up in the first flush of love that we ignore the signs something isn’t right. We see how anyone can find themselves in that position and how things can snowball into the crazy mess Emma finds herself in. 

Dramatic, gripping and unpredictable, I highly recommend this first-rate thriller.
