MY REVIEW:

Los Angeles, 1964, a time when the States is still reeling from the death of JFK, in the midst of the fight for Civil Rights, and being gripped by Beatlemania, there is a family they can always rely on to be perfect and make the world feel right for half an hour each week. It’s time to Meet the Newmans.

Nostalgic, moving, powerful and addictive, I couldn’t get enough of this charming and stirring story. It follows the Newmans, a real family who have played idealised versions of themselves on TV for the last twelve years. They are America’s favourite family. But behind the perfect facade, cracks have appeared and not all is what it seems. When patriarch Del is in a car accident, his wife, Dinah, must take the reins to ensure that their season finale goes ahead. She hires journalist Juliet Dunn but the two soon clash over what it means to be a woman in 1960s America. Truths are slowly revealed and we wonder if the Newmans will survive the fallout and pull off one last show. 

Jennifer Niven’s writing is vibrant and achingly human, the story is cleverly choreographed and filled with an eclectic cast of dynamic and memorable characters. I loved the nostalgic vibe that permeates every page, making me feel like I’d been transported back to 1960s America. But while the story is a sheer delight, it is also a sobering reminder of how different life was in the 60s, exploring some heavy and emotional topics including the Civil Rights Movement, LGBTQ rights, sexism, female rage, female empowerment and reproductive rights. The world may be a mess right now, but at least in most of the world we have the right to love whoever we want and women have the right to simple things like a bank account and contraception. 

Told from different perspectives, the characters felt authentic and believable, immersing me in every facet of their lives as they slowly unraveled. But all that glitters isn’t gold, and through the Newmans Niven examines the darker side of fame, showing us that perfection isn’t real and reminding us that even those who seem to have it all are going through things behind closed doors. I particularly enjoyed reading Dinah, Juliet and Guy, and loved watching and Dinah and Juliet learned so much from one another.

A thought-provoking and affirming read that will simultaneously lift your spirits and outrage you, Meet The Newmans is a must-read. Perfect for anyone who enjoyed Lessons in Chemistry.

MY REVIEW:

“On my fourth birthday, I plucked six severed fingers from the shower drain.”

And with that nightmarish opening, The Lamb sets the tone for what’s about to come. Deliciously dark, fearsome, murderous and unsettling, this hypnotic gothic horror is a debut you won’t forget. 


Margot lives with her Mama in a secluded cottage by the forest. They live off the land and take in strangers who knock at their door looking for help. Mama calls them ‘strays’ and offers them assistance, wine, food and warmth. After all, they need to be happy to taste good… 

It’s an isolated life full of rules set by her domineering mother. But things change when a stray named Eden knocks on the door. Unlike the others Eden is charismatic and enchanting and Mama’s desire proves stronger than her hunger. Eden is allowed to live and stay with them at the cottage. As Margot tries to adjust to the new dynamics at home, she is also grappling with changes within herself as she develops her first crush, begins to question the things that Mama has taught her, and struggles with the weight of their deadly secrets.

What a phenomenal debut! Atmospheric, sinister and savage but also tender and deeply felt, this unforgettable story gets under your skin. Lucy Rose showcases herself as a talent to be watched with this disturbing folkloric tale that feels like a modern Grimms’ fairytale. Blood drips from every word as with poetic, evocative and beguiling prose Rose pulls you deep inside Margot’s grim world. It is both deeply human and monstrously inhuman, exploring themes of motherhood, dysfunctional family dynamics, female rage, desire, control, trauma, morality and empowerment alongside grisly scenes of murder and cannibalism. 

The characters are richly drawn, relatable and real, and Margot is a powerful narrator. A young girl on the cusp of womanhood, she has known nothing but the bleak and horrifying existence her mother has forced her to live. A life full of loneliness, fear and secrets. My heart broke for her. I wanted to jump into the book and rescue her from that life and show her happiness and joy. Mama is a truly terrifying character. In some ways she feels pathetic, benign and unassuming. But we know she’s a cruel woman capable of brutal things who terrorises her daughter. And Eden is no better. When she arrived I initially had hope that she might rescue Margot, though I really should have known better than to expect a happy ending. After all, this fairytale is Grimm not Disney.

Menacing, depraved, unnerving and original, this is an absolute must read and one of my top books this year.

MY REVIEW:

Brave, powerful, visceral, and outrageous, this book is a masterpiece. Intertwining gothic fiction, historical fiction, romance and bawdy romp, this book broke me into pieces and then put me back together.  And that finale! I was lost for words, left feeling wrung-out, devastated, and uplifted all the same time. 

The Betrayal of Thomas True transports us to Georgian London, exploring the scandalous underbelly of the molly houses. Thomas True has arrived in London in search of a new life. But he’s harbouring a dangerous secret. A secret that leads him to be drawn into this bizarre underworld and its vibrant characters. The men who frequent them are forced to live double lives for fear of recrimination and risk everything to live as their true selves for a few short hours. But there is a rat amongst them who is betraying their secrets to a pair of cruel Justices. As Thomas and Gabriel, the molly’s guard, try to resist their forbidden love, can they unmask the rat before more lives are lost?

A. J. West is a master storyteller. This was my first time reading one of his books and he has immediately secured a spot on my auto-buy list. Expertly choreographed and sublimely written, West weaves gossamer layers of compelling storylines and a chorus of detailed characters together to create a world that leaps from the pages. It was so vivid that I could see the cobbled streets, smell the squalid air, and hear the raucous laughter of the mollies. West’s meticulous research was evident in the plethora of historic details but these never intruded on his storytelling, creating a story that was  both entertaining and educational as West shined a light on those who were forced to hide in the shadows. It felt welcoming, lively and enthralling from the opening pages and I felt like I’d stepped back in time as I lived every moment alongside the characters. This book captured my heart and soul, taking me through a rainbow of emotions. And that finale! I was lost for words, left feeling wrung-out, devastated, and uplifted all st the same time. 

Mr. West has filled this book with a motley crew of sassy, colourful, and captivating characters. The eponymous Thomas True is a fascinating, complicated protagonist who is on a journey of self-discovery. But does the title refer to him being betrayed, or is he the betrayer? I liked that we didn’t know, adding to the tension as I tried to decide if the things he was saying were true or a clever ruse to cover his tracks. Thomas finds what seems to be an authentic friendship with Gabe, a stoic, burly, bear of a man who is an absolute sweetheart underneath. His backstory broke my heart – I’m tearing up just thinking about it – and I liked him right away. He was easy to root for, I loved his friendship with Thomas, and I got really invested in their blossoming romance, even if I was worried about them being discovered. Gabe was probably my favourite character but I also had a real soft spot for Frump, the Queen of innuendo and a total riot who made me laugh out loud many times. I could happily read a whole book with him at the centre (possible future book idea, A.J.?). 

One of the things I think West does particularly well is portraying how treacherous life was for the mollies. Secrecy and a double life are a matter of life and death for these men, and the rat in their midst makes their lives even more hazardous. This brings me to Justices Grimp and Myre, an odious, vile and murderous pair who travelled the country in search of mollies to ‘bring to justice’, and the rat was giving them names. These evil men used religion and the pursuit of law and justice to sanction cruelty and persecution of others and I wished I could wipe the crooked smiles from their faces. Then there is the rat. I loved that West wrote this book so skillfully that it was hard to land on a suspect. Almost every single character had the potential to be the rat and I went back and forth through a number of suspects. This escalated the tension and kept me guessing, my heart racing as I tried to figure it out. 

Poignant, bold, mesmerising, and spectacular, The Betrayal of Thomas True is storytelling at its finest. Unmissable and unforgettable, this phenomenal tale is a must-read that I can’t recommend highly enough.

Witty, weird and wonderful, The Bones Beneath My Skin is another hit from master storyteller TJ Klune. It is a story of a strange and extraordinary little girl and her two unlikely protectors, following them as they embark on an action-packed road trip to safety. A story of found family, love, hope and what it means to be human, this book warmed me from the inside and I devoured it in under a day. I’ll admit, I’m not usually a sci-fi girlie, but I know I’ve loved everything I’d read so far by Mr. Klune so I decided to give it a chance. And I’m glad I did. This story is truly original and like nothing I’ve read before. It has a bit of everything: romance, mystery, sci-fi, fantasy and coming-of-age saga, all perfectly blended together to create a compelling tale that kept me on the edge of my seat. 

The story starts in March, 1995. Nate Cartwright’s life is a mess. His parents just died and he’s been fired. So he decides to spend the summer in the secluded cabin in the woods that his parents left him, hoping it will help him find a new direction in life. But when he arrives the cabin isn’t empty. Instead he’s confronted by a man with a gun and a little girl who says her name is Artemis Darth Vader. But Art is no ordinary little girl. She is special, strange and endearing, while Alex is standoffish and overprotective. But over time Alex and Nate bond. And when the people Alex is trying to protect Art from track them down, Nate decides to flee with them on a road-trip fraught with danger and an unknown destination.

The three main characters are richly drawn, fascinating and unforgettable. Nate is the ‘everyman’ who most of us will find easiest to relate to, but I loved reading gruff Alex and quirky Art, too. I had a particular soft spot for Art and loved this astonishing young girl. I liked that even though the three of them are so different they come together to create a heartwarming found family that anyone would love to be part of (minus the gun-wielding men chasing them) and I was rooting for them to get Art to safety. 

A remarkable and moving story for anyone who has ever felt like they don’t belong, I highly recommend this book.

MY REVIEW:

“Maybe I am a monster, but I can’t stop now. Not now I’m so close. I could never live with myself if he walked free.”

Evelyn and Tobias Moore’s world is shattered when their son, Joshua, is killed in a hit and run. Now, Aaron Alexander – the man responsible – is being released after serving 11 years but for Joshua’s mother that isn’t justice. She wants revenge; and she’s been counting down the days until she can make that happen. Now, that time has finally come. But as Evelyn and Tobias embark on their journey, they are on two opposing sides: Evelyn dead set on revenge, while Tobias wants to save his wife from herself. Their road trip towards vengeance and murder quickly becomes a nail-biting game of cat and mouse. Can there be redemption?

“I’ve got to do what I was afraid to do before. I’ve got to try and stop her.” 

He’s done it again! Unbearably tense, twisty, unpredictable and heartfelt, Redemption is another five-star read from the King of dilemma thriller, Jack Jordan. A master-class in thriller writing, this book has it all: action, suspense, foreboding and violence, but also heart, grief, rage, bitterness and hope. The story is told in five parts that begin with flashbacks to Evelyn and Tobias’ life in happier times. These sections were so emotional, emphasising the magnitude of their loss and how much their lives have changed since Joshua’s death. There is such a stark contrast that I’d have believed you if you’d told me I was reading about two different couples. Jordan makes you feel ALL the feelings, expertly conveying the nuances of grief and how that can look different for everyone. I got book whiplash as I would be close to crying one moment and on the edge of my seat the next, holding on tight with the breakneck speed of the chase. 

“I didn’t realise how all-encompassing grief could be. How tyrannical the rage against injustice would be on my thinking…” 

Jordan’s characters are always nuanced, relatable and deeply human. One of the things I love most about his book is his expertise at writing anti-heroes you can’t help but root for. He weaves their anguish, pain, dilemmas and humanity into the narrative, highlighting all the shades of grey and making it possible to see yourself in their shoes. Evelyn and Aaron are perfect examples of this. Evelyn’s every word, thought and action is raw, sizzling with white-hot rage, resentment, hatred, bitterness, pain and grief.  She can’t see straight for the need for vengeance and her need to exact what she determines to be justice overwhelms everything else. And as a mother I could understand it. I’m not a vengeful person but I can’t imagine how I would cope in her position and I had a lot of empathy for her, even if I was rooting for Tobias to stop her before she went too far. Meanwhile, Aaron seems like the obvious villain of the story, yet Jordan makes him human with his tragic backstory and deep remorse. I ended up really liking him and rooting for him to survive. Then there is Tobias. Tobias is a broken man who not only lost his only child, but also his wife the night Joshua died. Jordan really makes you feel his heartache and loneliness. His dilemma is palpable as he is torn between helping Evelyn and saving her from herself, even if it means helping the man who killed his child. It was an impossible situation and I felt for him even more as he is thrown into becoming someone he doesn’t recognise in his quest to stop Evelyn. 

Intense, heart-rending and bingeable, Redemption is another unmissable thriller from Mr. Jordan. Read it now!

DS Adam Tyler receives an anonymous tip regarding the disappearance of a young mother twenty-four years ago. Adam follows the tip to an abandoned cinema where he is later found fighting for his life. But was it an accident or did someone attack him? With his colleagues in the dark about what he was working on,  DC Mina Rabbani must retrace his steps to find answers while also taking charge of the Cold Case Unit. But she is unprepared for what she finds as the clues lead her uncomfortably close to home. How far is she willing to go to learn the truth?

The fourth instalment in the Adam Tyler series is one of the best yet. Skilfully written, cleverly plotted and filled with vivid imagery, Russ Thomas masterfully sets the tone and I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Thomas is an expert at intricately weaving together storylines that seem completely unrelated, and this time he left my jaw on the floor as he moved seamlessly between multiple timelines and narrators to reveal the shocking truth. 

Adam Tyler is a great protagonist but I must admit I really enjoyed seeing more of Mina Rabbani this time around. Although we’ve learned a lot about Adam over the last three books, Mina has remained quite elusive, and it was good to see her get her time to shine. I also enjoyed seeing how she worked with Doggett as we’ve not really seen them work together much before. There were some particularly compelling background characters this time, with Ruth really standing out for me. When we meet Ruth she’s downtrodden after being controlled her whole life, and  as more of her story was revealed I felt even more sorry for her. But there was also something about her that felt unnerving. Was that because she’s strange, or was there something more? This enigma only made her all the more compelling to me, as I love a character I’m unsure about. 

Fast-paced, chilling, suspenseful and addictive, this riveting thriller is another must-read from Mr. Thomas.

MY REVIEW:

A gunshot rings out at Damflask Reservoir on a cold winter morning. It leads to the discovery of a body that has a connection to the case Tyler’s father, Richard, was investigating before his death. Could this finally lead Tyler to the answers about his father’s death he’s been searching for all these years? As he digs deeper he must face those who will do anything to stop the truth from being revealed. But with all the clues seeming to say he’s on the right path, Tyler is determined nothing will stop him from finally learning what happened that day.

Gripping, tense and twisty, Russ Thomas has delivered another fantastic instalment in the DS Adam Tyler Series. Events pick up right after the cliffhanger at the end of book two, so I’d highly recommend you pick that one up first. This book felt more personal than ever with the search for Tyler’s godmother and mentor, DCI Diane Jordan, and a case that seems to be connected to Tyler’s father’s death. Since the start of this series there’s been a sense that his father’s death has overshadowed every facet of Tyler’s life so I was really rooting for him to find answers so he can finally move forward. But things obviously won’t be straight forward. Tyler is left not knowing who he can trust and there are some intense scenes as he tries to get to the truth. Meanwhile, the deeper he gets into the investigation, the more danger there is as those who know the truth try to stop it from coming to light. 

Fast-paced and intricately woven, the high-octane tension never drops for a moment, Thomas keeping you on the edge of your seat as he intricately weaves the threads together to a heart-pounding finale. A must for all thriller fans.

MY REVIEW:

“There is magic in the ordinary. Magic that has the power to change the world “

We’re back on  Marsyas Island with Linus, Arthur and their motley crew of magical children for the second book in the Cerulean Chronicles. This time the story is told from Arthur’s point of view, opening with a glimpse at the dark past he has risen from before picking up where the first book left off as him and Linus are settling into life as a family with their children, even adding to their brood when David, a young Yeti, moves into their home. But when Arthur is forced to make a public statement about his past, he and Linus find themselves fighting to protect the family they’ve created.

Heartwarming, uplifting, powerful and inspiring, once again TJ Klune has created a balm for the soul with this extraordinary tale. It was such a joy to be back in this captivating magical world with these wonderful characters. The real world around me disappeared as I lost myself in the one Klune has created, brought to life by his colourful, evocative storytelling. A story about love, inclusion, tolerance, self-worth and found family, Klune explores the topic of prejudice even further this time around and adds in the monsters that live inside all of us, asking whether it is ever okay to  proudly claim that side of us  or if it should be hidden. It’s powerful and thought-provoking, but wrapped up in a cosy and whimsical package that stops it from ever feeling heavy. 

But it is the richly drawn and compelling characters that shine brightest for me. These characters may be magical beings and considered dangerous, particularly anti-christ, Lucy, but they are relatable and feel deeply  human. I love how Klune has used magical creatures as a metaphor for the LGBTQ community or anyone else who is different from the ‘norm’. Like Arthur and Linus, I feel protective of them and my heart was pounding as their future came under threat from the Department in Charge of Magical Youth – aka DICOMY. I was raging at the things their representatives said and the things they tried to do, but was cheering as Arthur, Linus, the children, and others on the island all stood against them. 

This series has become one of my favourites, so I am really hoping this isn’t the last we hear from these characters. And don’t miss reading the author’s note at the end. If the book doesn’t break you, then that will 😭😭 

Soulful, spellbinding and full of heart, Somewhere Beyond the Sea is uplit at its finest. A must-read for anyone who wants their day made brighter, add this, and the previous book, to your TBR now.

MY REVIEW:

“A home isn’t always the house we live in. It’s also the people we choose to surround ourselves with.”

A ray of sunshine. A feast for the imagination. A balm for the soul. These are just some of the descriptions that come to mind when I think about The House in the Cerulean Sea. A warm hug in book form, this is a gorgeous and quirky story about found family, the lasting footprints we leave in each other’s lives, and finding the magic in the ordinary. And it captured my heart and soul completely. 

It follows Linus Baker, 40, who lives a solitary life in his small house with only his cat, Calliope, for company. Linus works as a Case Worker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, overseeing the well-being of children who live in government-sanctioned orphanages. One morning, Linus is unexpectedly summoned to a meeting by Extremely Upper Management and given a highly classified assignment: travel to and assess Marsyas Island Orphanage to discover if the six dangerous children who live there are going to bring about Armageddon. But these curious children aren’t the only secret being kept on the island and Linus is unprepared for what he is about to discover.

Last month, when I realised that I was about to listen to my 50th audiobook of the year, I knew it had to be something special. So, I decided to continue my journey into TJ Klune’s backlist, choosing this one in anticipation of reading the follow up later this month. I was apprehensive about all the hype, but this extraordinary story did not disappoint. I became an instant fan of Klune when I read Under the Whispering Door earlier this year and this extraordinary story has solidified his status as one of my favourite authors. Klune is a master storyteller and he brought every word and character to life with his beautiful storytelling and richly imagined and evocative descriptions. His stories are guaranteed to brighten your day and this one is a glorious burst of vivid technicolour. But among the brightness and cheer, Klune also weaves more serious topics into the narrative, this time tackling prejudice in its many forms. 

Then there are the characters. What a unique and entertaining motley crew they were. I loved Linus, the honest and sweet protagonist who goes through life mostly unnoticed. Linus is human, but his job involves magical creatures, including the children at the orphanage. Living at Marsyas Island Orphanage are a gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, an unidentifiable green blob, a were-Pomeranian, and the Antichrist. These children are dangerous and have some frightening quirks, but what I loved about them is that they are like any other children at heart. I even found myself having a real soft spot for Lucy, the twisted but undeniably childlike son of the devil himself. Then there is Arthur, the orphan’s caretaker. Arthur is very mysterious and we can tell he’s hiding something which makes it hard to know if we really can trust this charming man. But what we do know is that there is chemistry sizzling between Arthur and Linus, which I loved and I was willing Linus to give into his feelings. Marysasy Island Orphanage and its inhabitants have a profound impact on Linus and change his life for the better. I loved watching Linus blossom from a wallflower into who he was by the end of the book and the beautiful relationships he formed with the other characters. 

Charming, witty, whimsical, heartfelt and uplifting, this mesmerising fantasy is a clear-your-schedule, lock out the world and read in one sitting affair. And that final line! Oh, my heart. I am so glad I only have a few more days until book two.

MY REVIEW:

“He can’t bear to think of her that way, all cold and dead and wasting away in her grave beneath the rose bushes. He’d always pictured her whole, whenever he thought about her. All peaceful and sleeping. The way she’d looked when he buried her.” 

On a cold winter night, a nighthawker – a treasure hunter who operates under the cloak of darkness – breaks into Sheffield’s Botanical Gardens to search for treasures buried beneath the flower beds and instead uncovers the arm of a murdered young woman. DS Adam Tyler is called in to investigate, drawing him and his team into the mysterious, tangled web of nighthawkers, hidden treasure, secrets and murder. 

Russ Thomas’ debut thriller, Firewatching, was one of my favourite books of 2020, leaving me eagerly awaiting its follow up. But with such excitement comes trepidation. Would Nighthawking live up to the brilliance of Firewatching? The answer is, yes. Like its predecessor, Nighthawking is a heart-pounding thriller that had me on the edge of my seat. 

Being set in my hometown gives this series a special place in my heart, but that isn’t the only reason I love these books. They are exquisitely written, intricate and action-packed, bringing Sheffield to life not only in terms of the vivid imagery, but the atmosphere. When I first heard that this book would be set in the Botanical Gardens I was delighted as it is probably my favourite place in the city. I even went there just last week and loved how clearly I could picture every moment that happened there. It was a fabulous setting that the author has clearly researched extensively and I know that the Gardens will forever be synonymous with this book for me. 

The author has filled this book with a cast of richly drawn, compelling and nuanced characters. The multiple narrators allow him to weave in the human elements of the story and offer us greater insight into their nature, behaviour and motivations, and drawing more empathy from us for certain characters by showing us the trauma and pain they have suffered. I loved being back with Tyler and his team, a realistic bunch who bicker and don’t always work together well. I like that Tyler isn’t your usual affable and charming protagonist. He is someone you warm up to and I think his spiky, zealous nature gives the books a bit of an edge over the ones with a more likeable central character. I was glad to see Mina Rabbani back as she is probably my favourite character. It was great to see her  grow in confidence and come into her own over the course of this book and I’m looking forward to seeing what is in store for her next. 

Complex, twisty, dark and exhilarating, Nighthawking is an addictive page-turner that keeps you guessing. This can be read as a standalone, but I would highly recommend reading them in order because they are simply fantastic thrillers. A must read for all thriller lovers.
